My original unit went bad and decided to buy a unit with a 10 yr backup battery which this unit has. Since it's the same basic brand replacement only took about 2-3 min total.

We very much appreciated the ease around this purchase during the Covid-19 Crisis; Our fire alarm system went off, Firemen to the house and they recommended this longer life replacement. Had same brand installed 7 yrs ago and they worked through there expected life. Thank You

Combined smoke and CO alarm, with a battery that lasts 10 years. Easy to replace my existing BRK First Alert hardwired 9120 alarms. Battery was included. Due to the CO sensor life limitations, I plan to replace these in 7 years. If I were not replacing existing First Alert detectors, I would have bought the Kidde ones that speak to describe the emergency. Hopefully by the time these need to be replaced, there will be a hardwired interconnected option with smoke, CO, speaking, and a 10-year battery that fits my existing wiring harness, or by then maybe I will be ready to wire a different harness and mounting ring. Shipment was as promised.

BackgroundI bought this to replace a similar-looking BRK First Alert CO-only detector in my basement that had reached its end of life after 7 years. I chose this model because my local building code requires a hard-wired detector with battery backup near my gas-powered boiler, and I wanted one with the longest possible lifespan, which is apparently 10 years. I would have been happy with another CO-only detector because I have a separate smoke detector in my basement at the foot of the stairs, but I couldn't find a hardwired CO-only detector with a 10-year battery backup. Having two smoke detectors a few feet apart in my small unfinished basement is overkill, but I'm required to have a smoke detector at the foot of the stairs, and to have a CO detector within a certain distance of my boiler. If the team that installed my new boiler had thought about it, or consulted me about where to install the CO detector, I could have made do with a single combined detector, but now I'd have to rewire to change its location of the CO detector. (The smoke detector is battery-powered.)ReviewInstallation wasn't too difficult. The only difficult part was figuring out which circuit my original hard-wired CO detector was on. Because my previous CO detector was the same brand, I was able to plug the original plastic connector into the receptacle on this detector, rather than having to actually connect the wires, which saved a step. (Installation would have been more involved if I had wanted to use the interconnectivity feature of this detector.) However, even though the shape, size, and screw-in base of this detector looked identical to those of my original CO-only detector, I was disappointed to discover that the new combined detector didn't fit the base of my original CO detector as you might expect. I had to remove the original base and install the one that came with this detector. You would think that First Alert would have standardized this part to save on costs and inventory, not to mention to make it easier for customers to upgrade from the CO-only detector to the combined detector. This is a good, no-frills, combined CO and smoke detector that meets my local building code. It's not very attractive (not an issue for me because I installed it in an unfinished basement), and it has no bells and no whistles, just an obnoxious alarm and an irritating end-of-life warning beep pattern that you won't be able to silence until you could replace the unit (per design). It could be better, though. For example, the green LED that indicates that the device is receiving power is inside the cover, so it's not as visible as it might be, and it would be nice to have an LED readout of the CO level, if detected. So far, so good. If the battery fails before 10 years, I'll be sure to update this review.
