I boil some russet potatoes and added them to these. I made them for Thanksgiving that way and people raved about the flavor. I added butter, some salt, & pepper.Good deal and excellent taste even by themselves.

The original Potato Gems (purple label) were a delight: Light, fluffy, delicious and decent bang for your buck. The new and “improved” reformulation is absolutely atrocious. Slimy, heavy, with a synthetic aftertaste. And the smell or what did you do with that smell?! Dollar per dollar it’s also a much worse deal. The original 3 lb package retailed under $22 and actually mixed at a 1:2 ratio. The new can is only 1 lb 7 oz, sells for $15 and you have to mix it at 1.5:2 to get anything resembling mashed potatoes. At the recommended 1:2 mix ratio, you get a watery soup.I sincerely hope I just got a bad batch and the rest of the product is not nearly as bad but I’m not holding my breath. Meantime, I am buying up whatever original stock I can get my hands on given its 10 year shelf life.Auguson Farms, please please please bring the original formula back!

I guess if you make your instant mashed potatoes on the saltier side, these will work for you. I didn't realize that salt was already added until I went to use these. They're fine otherwise. Just not what I prefer.

My mom bought Augason Farms can growing up and they were always good. They’re great now too. They are packed well. There was no dent. We won’t be using these for a while hopefully as they’re for emergency storage. I love that I don’t have to worry about if they get wet from a disaster or anything. They’ll keep well and don’t take up much room.

I don't like the new improved mashed potatoes. They require twice the amount of potato mix than the gems. It's not an improvement, it's like a can of store brand mashed potatoes. You don't get the same value for your money. I'd skip these.

I keep a few #10 cans of food around because I live in a hurricane prone area.I use these potatoes often, they are cheaper, taste like the boxed, but cheaper. Easy to make for quick dinners.
