FINALLY A GOOD BACKPACKING MEAL!!I purchased two Bighorn meals for my son to take on a week-long backpacking trip. We ordered this one to try out. The meal hydrated well, the noodles had the texture of real noodles just boiled. The chunks of REAL chicken and mushrooms were impressive. Taste was spot on! I swear I could taste red-wine in the sauce. It did not taste like the typical freeze-dried meal. There was absolutely no graininess or watery mess as there is with other name brands. You know the kind..no matter how long you let it sit or how little water you add, it turns out like soup. NOT with this meal! It was fantastic. Yes, it's a bit more costly, however the quality and quantity of the product makes it worth it. This is certainly a double portion and will absolutely fill you up on the trail. I will definitely be purchasing these for future kayak trips and outings this summer.

This is the best freeze dried meal we have tried so far. It actually rehydrated extremely well and tasted like a fresh cooked meal. It had a really good flavor profile. This will be a go to for all future camping trips.

I wasn’t familiar with chicken masala when I bought this meal. It’s a sweet wine that gives a delicious brown sugar and vanilla taste to the sauce. The chicken was soft and tender. It’s such good quality. I’m super impressed. I loved the pasta with this one.

This review is for a cook-in-pouch freeze dried meal for camping by Bighorn Mountain Food. Although I am posting it on the Chicken & Mushroom Marsala with Pasta flavor, my review is actually for the Best Butter Chicken & Rice flavor, because that is the meal I actually received due to an apparent warehouse error. Since they're both Indian style meals though, I'm guessing they're fairly similar. Regardless, I have to write my review here because this was the one I ordered. Anyway, I've never had one of these meals before, so I was excited to try it. All I had to do was add water, reseal the package, and wait 15 minutes. To my amazement, after the 15 minutes I had a truly delicious looking and smelling meal. I dug in and found the meal to be far better than I ever would've expected. The rice was cooked perfectly, and there were big, tender chunks of chicken. I had one piece that had gristle, but the rest was very good. The curry-type spices were delicious. I was tempted to eat the whole pouch in one sitting, but managed to stop and save half for lunch the next day. Which brings me to the two issues I have with this product. First, it is priced at $17.95 for what would be one dinner serving or two lunch sized servings, and I could get Butter Chicken at a nice Indian restaurant for that price. So the price is a bit steep. The second, and much more significant issue, is that the Butter Chicken & Rice pouch has MORE than a day's worth of sodium. It did seem somewhat salty for my tastes, but when I checked the label I realized it's way, way more than "somewhat salty". It's actually got an unsafe level of sodium--2320 mg. They really need to reduce the sodium in this meal by close to half for it to be reasonable.

This is a pretty good shelf stable meal, though, the listed expiration date is only a year or two out. I'm sure it lasts much longer than that but it's notable that they DON'T give this a 5, 10 or more year shelf life themselves.Tastes largely like a frozen meal when prepared, a lot nicer than expected but that may actually be owed to its shorter shelflife.

Very tasty smaller portions than some 2 servings I’ve had though.

Made this opening day in WI. Outaide temp was around 30, used my jetboil to get the 1-1/4 cups of water to a boil. I also used the bighorn sleeve to stow it in while it rehydrated. I waited exactly 13 minutes. If i had to do again i would wait another 5 minutes. However, this was like eating a meal at home. Great flavor, taste, texture was all there. I added nothing other than water. I will absolutely buy again. A bit hard on the wallet, but it does ease the pain knowing the flavor is so good. Picture was after i was 1/2 done. And yes i ate the whole thing.
