Needed the expected setup out of the box, but once done and fresh strings put on this is a great little mandolin. Very happy with my purchase

I had this alongside an Eastman MD-315. I thought that they were very close in tone... different, but of similar quality. But I much preferred the neck on the Kentucky, and I thought that the tuners were much better too. Got a good deal on it and I'm happy with it. Like pretty much every new instrument I've ever bought, I had to lower the nut slots a bit.

I evaluate any instrument on three criteria; build quality, tone and playability. I give this mandolin very high points on build quality. Having looked it over very closely, the few flaws that exist are extremely minor and one would have to hunt for them to be found… well done! The tone quality is also there. The low tones are quite full and the high notes ring like a bell. The intonation was perfect out of the box making it a real pleasure to listen to. There’s not much for string relief mid-neck, but not so flat that it causes buzzing. On the down side, the initial playability was not good. Clearance over the first fret was .030” under the G and D strings, and nearly that much for the A and E. This makes first fret fingering almost impossible and very uncomfortable at the very least. With the bridge adjusted as far down as it would go, the gap under the G string at the 12th fret was right around .090” (just under 2.5mm)… too high for my preference. Some people prefer this height for improved tone, but the bridge shouldn’t be bottomed out at that setting.I immediately had a luthier file down the slots on the nut to achieve .013” under the G and D strings and .010” under the A and E. I also removed the upper saddle bar from the bridge and shaved 1mm off the bottom of the ebony jacking nut-rests. With this done I could drop the 12th fret gap down to around .060”. This work greatly improved the playability shortcomings and the mandolin is now fast and easy on the fingers without any noticeable sacrifice of tone. These improvements were fairly easy to apply and not uncommon if you buy an instrument directly from the manufacturer. Many shops would make these improvements before setting the instrument out for sale, but typically this support comes at a slightly higher price tag. Whether you have your favorite luthier do the work or you go with a shop setup, expect to invest just a little more on this mandolin to bring it to it’s full potential. In my estimation, it’s well worth it.

Mandolin was in perfect shape. Nice flame maple on the back, sides and neck. Seems to have been setup as I have heard this can be an issue straight from the factory. Strings were loosened for shipment. Mando also included a nice gigbag. Very satisfied with the purchase.
