Heavy Formvar magnet wire is copper wire with a thin layer of insulation, and is used mainly in winding guitar pickups. Raw copper is drawn to meet specific size requirements based on the National Electrical Manufacturer's Association (NEMA) standards. This magnet wire meets the NEMA MW-15-C standard for operating temperature (105°C/211°F) and insulation makeup. The insulation is made from a Heavy Formvar enamel, and protects the coiled wire from short-circuiting.

Ordered once and couldn't get more than a couple of feet of pull at a time without it winding underneath a different layer. (knots in the winding) which led to me trying to unravel before I spun on a pickup. Terrible mess. Good thing I didn't spend hours working on a faulty wind.

This wire is great and makes some nice sounding pickups. I just wanted to add that you have to sand off the formvar coating to solder the wire. A previous review stated there were soldering issues with this wire and it must be different than the wire fender used. There are no issues with soldering this wire. You must sand off the coating on the section of wire before wrapping it around the eyelets and soldering to them.

Built a full set of Strat pickups, then burnt the bobbins trying to get the solder to flow. I called Remington and they said they didn't know of any reasons for this but would replace the wire. An hour latter Larry at Remington called back and told me that Heavy formvar was not solderable and he was canceling the replacement wire. In the product description there is no mention of special procedures needed to make the product usable as magnet wire, (it is magnet wire right). I am now out the wire and the bobbins for the pickups. Fender used this wire for 15+ years in their pickup formulas so I guess it's my fault for not knowing the insulation had changed to the point that it was no longer usable as magnet wire? It would have been nice to have this explained in the product description!
