I replaced my old smoke detectors that required me to change batteries twice a year, if I remembered, with these. Very simple installation in 5 minutes or less. Now I don't have to think about batteries. In 10 years it will let me know that it's time to pitch them and replace with new ones. Easy peasy.

Works for about 10 years. Will chirp when it is ready for replacement. Big box store (HD) sells this in plastic retail packaging for 50% more. If you order this from Amazon (I ordered the double pack) it arrives in labeled cardboard packaging. It comes with instructions and mounting screws. I also includes the mounting plate. You screw it into your ceiling and once the plate is secure, it is a quarter turn clockwise to lock it in place and to activate. In 10+ years it will chirp and you reverse the process and buy a new one. Don't be fooled into thinking that the ones that take 9v or AA batteries will last indefinitely with battery changes... they still wear out and will chirp when they need replacement. These are effective and save you the hassle of frequent battery changes.

Perhaps I missed it somewhere but it's important to know they are battery only.

Way back in 2014, I received an earlier version of this product as a thank you for working a safety event. It was our first carbon monoxide detector. I installed it easily with batteries and a mounting plate, tested it, all good. Fast forward to December. We've just arrived home from a trip out of town. We're carrying our luggage in the house when... "Carbon monoxide detected... carbon monoxide detected..."After a brief chat about what to do, we loaded three people and five cats back into the car and went to a hotel down the street for the night. A technician came to our house the next day to find the culprit - our old furnace. He had a little meter that measured how much of the gas was present, and to our horror, assured us that if we hadn't gone to a hotel, we would've gone to bed and never woken up.So buy this thing, buy one for every room, because continuing to be alive is definitely a five star rating!

Simply install the back plate on a wall (high enough) or the ceiling with the supplied screws.Remove the plastic cover from the detector; it will beep once, loudly. Watch your ears. There is nothing else you need to do for the next 10 years!

I bought this a few years ago because I needed a smoke detector, but I also wanted CO detection. I always wondered if it actually worked, as I am prone to do with things that only do something in an emergency. I got my answer in the wee hours of yesterday morning: Our power was out for almost a week, in a dangerous heat wave. We have a generator to run essentials like fridges and freezers, and we also plugged in a small window unit AC because it was that dangerously hot. At one point we moved the generator to what we thought was a better location, neglecting one vital detail: just above that spot was an attic vent.Everyone was asleep, and around 4am my brother and I were awoken by a very loud BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP we had never heard before. Once we figured out it was my Kidde detector, we were confused. The generator had been running all week, and we've never had a CO alarm go off before. No one has symptoms. We had another CO detector, and it wasn't going off. Was the Kidde one defective? We took it outside, it stopped beeping. Back in the house: BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. Oh, it's not defective. Called 911, shooed the rest of the family out of the house. Firemen arrive, and they praise our quick response: Inside the house the CO level had risen to 40 ppm, a dangerous level over time, but the attic was a whopping 200 ppm. We could have died if we had ignored the alarm. As it was they urged all of us to go to the emergency room. You know how in the US you can tell how bad off you are by how fast the ER starts treating you? They had all five of us on oxygen within minutes of walking in the door. Let me reiterate: none of us had symptoms of CO poisioning, not even our chronically ill members, but we all had elevated blood levels. The other detector we had DID go off, but not until it had been placed in a room with a window near where the generator was. Needless to say, I've already ordered another Kidde unit and will probably acquire more in the future.
