I use this as a truly free-standing skimmer, in a pond without a liner (it is a converted swimming pool, filled to 4' depth).Pros: basically works as it should, and was pretty low cost.Cons: the range of water levels that it works with is only about 4", and my pond varies more than that. There is an inlet near the bottom of the skimmer that allows water in even with the level is below the skimmer intake, but that inlet does not allow enough water to enter and so, with a low water level, the pump pulls in air. A second issue is that there are gaps between the removable filter canister where leaves, etc, can sneak by, and there are also gaps in the secondary filter. As a result, some material gets through to where the pump is. Third, the space for the pump is not that large, so I had to remove the "cage" from the pump. If no material got through the filters (see issue #2), this would not be a problem. But enough stuff gets through that the pump gradually gets clogged, perhaps every few weeks.Given those 'cons', why 4 stars? I suspect most skimmers will have similar issues to some extent, and this one is relatively inexpensive and does end up keeping my pond clean.(44,000 gal pond [big!] with 10,000 gph pump)

The skimmer is brilliantly designed for simplicity of installation with no liner cutting or gasket fuss. It came with a broken skimmer basket and tabs that hold the mesh filter to the divider between the pump housing and the skimmer box. I sent the manufacturer an email and they replied right away and sent out brand new parts. This is my first Pond and I didn’t even yell or or cuss while setting it in and getting it level:) All I need to do now is build a cover for the plumbing and UV clarifier behind it. This is definitely the way to go on future ponds for me.

This thing has been a huge pain since I put it in. First, it is really expensive for what it is, second it requires a very narrow rang in the water level to work at all, too high and the door will flop outwards and get stuck, too low and the whole thing tries to float. This could easily be resolved by adding a few floats and hinged inlets inside. Lastly, it is ugly, and I mean UGLY. I will be removing and building an intake bay next spring.

Looks like a sturdy product. Have not installed it just yet though. This has a very big pump compartment and should hold a pump of any size. Wish the top cover was a nutral stone color and not black, but easy enough to paint this. Like the fact this sits in the pond and I don't have to put it behind the liner, drain down the pond to do this. Also a little shelf to sit a plant on to help hide it some.

This skimmer is just what my pond needed! My pond water was constantly discolored from all the leaves and debris, but this skimmer fixed everything. My pump fits inside and doesn’t get clogged with debris. The clean out basket is easy to remove and dump, and the particle filter removes muck. I wish I had bought this a few years ago! Perfect for smaller ponds where there isn’t room for a skimmer to sit outside of the liner.

When I received the skimmer the door and screws were laying loose in the box, but the box wasn't damaged at all. It was in an Amazon box, so perhaps it was damaged in the Amazon warehouse before packaging? I thought, oh well, it's not so hard to reattach the door and set it all up in my pond. It was a bit odd though, that the screws were two different types. The heads were both the same but one had a pointed end and the other had a flat end. After getting it all put together, it looked fine. Once I started up the pump though, the door just never seemed to lay quite right. A very tiny bit of water was making its way over the door, but most of it was being sucked in from the sides of the door. I called the Pond and Garden Depot number and the folks there tried to help me figure out the problem, but nothing was making a difference. They sent me out a new one, this one was packaged in the box that the skimmer was actually supposed to be in (with the skimmer pictured on the label) and it's been working just great. Unfortunately, when I pulled the original skimmer out to return it, one of the screws popped back out and is lost in the bottom of my pond somewhere. I didn't take the other one out to check, but I'm just hoping it wasn't the one with the sharp point at the end. When I told them that I was using a mag-drive 1200 gph pump they did tell me that I would really have better results if I used a larger one and I do agree with them on that, but considering that it is the end of the year, I think I can get by with it until next spring.Over all, the skimmer is working great and the people at the Pond and Garden Depot were wonderful. I will definitely buy from them again for any future needs.

I bought this because I didn't want to cut my liner. It works well and I'm very satisfied. Only 4 stars because a small amount of debries make it past the barrier between the basket and the pump. Also, it's almost impossible to completely stretch the liner and back fill perfectly around it. Overall I'm very happy with this and would recommend it. Also, FYI a 700 gph pump was not strong enough to pull debries from my pond (surface area apron 150sq ft), and a 2000 gph would not fit in the skimmer. I ended up using a 1300 gph pump which works just fine.
