I've never used these for smoking but only for grilling steaks and chops. Hickory chunks burn hotter than charcoal so if you want to cook a rare steak properly, listen up.Start some charcoal. When the coals are hot, throw on a few chunks. Wait until they will catch fire and the chunks will create high, very hot, flames. Throw on your steaks or chops. Fat drippings will cause flare ups, but it's all good.2-3 minutes (depending on thickness) with the meat on fire on each side and you are all set. The hickory adds such a nice outdoor flavor. You will have seared beauties and perfect inside, no gray meat from slow cooking.Best to do this on a hibachi or cast iron grill. Too hot for a normal smoker-type barbecue.

Love this brand of smoking chips. Have used all the wood types and love that size is consistently maintained and work super in my 30 inch MasterBuilt electric smoker. I have permanently affixed the cold smoke attachment to my unit and I easily get 5-6 hours of smoke with brand.

I have bought many different styles of Western's cooking chunks. (Hickory, Oak, Apple, Cherry) all of which have been pretty flavorful and provide a really good value when I bought them on sale. (BTW $4.50-$8) They burn well and clean and provide a great smokey flavor to your foods. I have found the bag volumes and weights to be pretty consistent and the quality fairly good. Some misshapen chunks and bark don't bother me as other reviewers. I think it's a prett's good product and cheap enough when ordered in bulk to cook with as a substitute for charcoal. Wood is king and beats charcoal any day. Have two chimneys on hand and cook over pure wood at these prices. Good luck.Update 1/19: prices have shot up but, I stand by my review. The wood is a good value and provides a good flavor to foods.

I just started smoking meats and fish and came to Amazon to see if I could get different flavor chunks as I use a charcoal smoker. So far, I've used these hickory chunks for meats and the cherry chunks (same brand) for fish. I do not soak the wood prior and just lay them directly on the coals. They produce a lot of smoke almost instantly, and add great flavor t whatever I am smoking. I can do about 4 batches of smoking with one bag (I don't have a really large smoker, does about 2-3 rib racks at a time). With the Add-On Item pricing, this really is a no-brainer. Will continue to use as long as pricing/availability is good.

I smoke a lot of meats with my electric smoker and this Hickory is one of the woods that I always use. It offers the meat such a truly rich flavor that is hard to get with other meats. Now that said, Hickory is a stronger smoke taste, so if you want something more mild, then don't use this. I however, love the smoke taste so I use this on chicken, pork, beef, and even cheese.I have been using the Western brand since I started smoking and have found that the chips work very well in my electric smoker. I normally buy not on Amazon but from a local retailer because it seems cheaper than here, however, any Western chips will be a great quality and you'll be happy with your smoked food when you are done

Quality Product and Price!Western's line of wood chunks for grilling are wonderful! They are at LEAST half the price that it costs at the store, and the quality is excellent! Most of the chunks are evenly sized, and they release great flavor. We bought cherry, mesquite, hickory, and pecan to use in our ceramic grill. The quality of these wood chunks is very good. How can a wood chunk be of a certain quality level?First, I have burned these in my bullet smokers and on my charcoal grill for years, but recently discovered them listed on Amazon.The wood is aged yet not rotted and old which makes it ideal for flavoring whatever it is you are cooking.The chunks are fist sized which allows for long burn times in my bullet smokers and grill.The bag had only a few pieces of bark and some slivers.Likely these came loose in transit as every bag I have ever bought in stores is the same way.If you need or want wood chips, these are also available.The price as an Amazon add-on item is better than what my local stores charge even on sale and is the identical size and product.Since I am only a recreational barbecue and grill guy, this purchase makes sense for me. The convenience of having these already split and packaged eliminates any savings and my desire to buy and cut my own hickory into these sizes.
