The magnetic vice is not very stable and makes it hard to use when operating a lathe.

Threads are a little rough but should be fine with a little break in. The holder tightens up really nice and holds it's shape well after some adjusting. The magnet is really strong and there are bottom and rear magnet positions. I would definitely recommend it for use with runout gauges or plunge type gauges.

The base has a sturdy magnet in it. You have to really try to move it when in the "on" position. The flexible neck is very adjustable. Movement is smooth after initial adjustment. Holds the dial indicator I use very well. You don't have to crank down all the way if you adjust it correctly to begin with.

These work great for my soldering applications. I purchased a second one after verifying the quality is satisfactory for my needs. However, I would not rely on them to maintain a spatial location with repeated physical contact / impact required by any of the dial indicators I've used. They might would be good with non-mechanical switches and sensors like proximity, hall effect, or lasers.

Have only used a few times but seems like a really good base and once you tighten up, it holds firm. Will buy another if this one ever breaks.
