Hail protection principles based on impact dynamics (from the patent file)
The energy absorbed by the protective material layer must be equal to the kinetic energy of a hailstone
- A hailstone (5) is modeled as a spherical object with an impact speed Vo and mass m. As shown in the figure, the indentation /impact force P of a spherical indenter (hail radius R) is a function of the indentation depth δ and the contact stiffness C based on Hertz’s contact law. The contact stiffness C is an increasing function of the Young’s modulus (a material constant to evaluate whether the material is hard or soft) of the protective material layer (31).
- The protection mechanism is based on the energy balance, i.e., the energy absorbed by the protective material layer (31) must be equal to the kinetic energy of a hailstone when the maximum indentation depth δmax is achieved. As long as the thickness of the specific protective material (Tpm) is greater than δmax, no kinetic energy can be transferred to the car structures (41). Therefore, a thick protective panel is needed for a large hailstone. However, most hail protection products do not state the hailstone sizes for protection.
- For some cheap products designed and made in China, the protective material layer is too thin, and the protective material is very soft. According to the energy principle, a very soft material requires a large layer thickness to absorb the kinetic energy from the hailstone. Only the hail shield is a perfect design to satisfy (1) the energy principle, and (2) balanced protective material volume, weight, and cost. Please DO NOT complain about the weight of the hail shield---because we have to stop the damage from LARGE hailstones at a reasonable price!

This is a great product that protects the panels of the vehicle that get the most damage from hail storms. We've been repairing hail damage vehicle for several years now and this is cheap insurance for somebody traveling or that lives in an area that gets hail often.

Got one of these for my Honda CRV, and it worked great during a Texas hailstorm! No damage whatsoever when all my neighbors had broken windows. Ended up buying one for my sister as well! Super thick padding and very impact resistant. A bit expensive, but well worth the price for what you get. A lot of the other covers on Amazon are just crappy thin vinyl, but this cover actually has great padding!

I can’t always fit my vehicle into the garage so this is good to have during the stormy season in case of hail. First off it is heavier than I was expecting, which I guess is good so that it stays in place better during a storm. Thick foam and it secures in place with straps. It’s basically just a giant padded blanket but that’s all you need to protect from dents. Product did not work with the door handles of my 2007 dodge charger. I used a seal skin cover to better secure it to the car. Instructions are a bit confusing a step by step with pictures would be awesome. Face the hood should it be down and on the passenger side or should it be up and on the passenger size. It seems thick enough to protect against large hail. It really smells even after months of airing out.

The protective automotive impact absorbing pad by Novel Protection is made in PRC (china). The panels that make up this pad are thick and do absorb impact. The coverage on the unit I ordered only covers the top and had no side protection. I found it hard to attach this without having the straps rub against the body. This will leave a mark in the paint with a wind storm. I do like the idea of this, and I worked with trying to get a way to attach this without paint issues, but was unsuccessful.3 stars (due to the attachment issues)

If you live in areas that get frequent hail storms and you have to park outside, you know the gut-wrenching feeling of watching it pelt down on your vehicle and hoping that it isn't doing damage. This product is a fantastic way to help protect it in those situations! The shield arrives folded in a large storage bag. It's made out of tough canvas-type material with foam inside and has straps to help tie it down to your vehicle door handles. I highly recommend trying it out before you're scrambling to deploy it while dodging hail. Ideally, you should go ahead and put it on your car if you know a storm with the likelihood hail is approaching. This is a fantastic product and I recommend it!

Another Colorado hail storm, this one, no damage to my 2019 Toyota 4Runner because of this cover. Practice with it first if you do it by yourself. Takes 2 minutes tops to deploy. Definitely worth the money, those cheap thin covers won’t protect jack.
