I got this for my mom for a Christmas present a few years back and it turned into a gift for the whole family. We all contributed recipes, pictures and stories and love the printed cookbook. Even four years later we still add recipes to our online family cookbook and regularly use it. I'd give it ten stars if I could

My extended family is always hunting for a recipe that my grandparents made. We all have some copies of some of the recipes, but there are some we have not located yet. A few years ago, I started a Family Cookbook and it has been wonderful! As my family comes across a recipe, they send me a picture of it and I add it to the cookbook. When we have time, we all log in and type out the recipes that go with the pictures. We realized that the latest generation has not been taught cursive writing in school, so these recipes would be lost forever when my generation is gone. Family Cookbook gives us a way to keep the handwritten recipes and still let the 'kids' be able to read them.

The company has struck an excellent balance: they provide a website that is incredibly easy to use and allows for full collaboration from even the least web-savvy participants, but is able to produce a highly polished cookbook with minimal effort from the editor.Logging onto the website was incredibly easy. I had an issue with the code provided. I emailed customer support and got an answer the same day--log in, create a free account, and they would convert it to a paid account. This was remarkable, because the issue happened over a weekend. Even so, customer support got back to me in record time. Within 24 hours, my 'free' account (which is more than powerful enough to get you started) was upgraded to a full-fledged paid account. Yes, there was a fail of the initial code. However, I was up and running the same day I had the problem and I haven't seen customer support this fast in a long, long time. This kind of customer support really adds value.When you first see the website, you may be a bit underwhelmed. There are no bells and whistles, no eye-catching animations, no flashy modern color schemes. That said, the site may have a 10-years-ago like look, but it more than makes up for this in sheer ease of use.Everything about the website keeps things simple. Everything is laid out in blocks and easy to find. When you input your first recipe you simply put in the title, the name of the contributor, a list of ingredients, and instructions. Notes can be added as well. There is a drop-down to select a category, which is pre-populated with common cookbook sections. There is the option to add a picture if you have one. You simply type in the text or copy and paste your ingredients and recipe, hit save, and you're done.Once input, the recipe is ready for a cookbook. As you add recipes, the software creates a table of contents and index on the fly. Amazingly, you can print a PDF of a cookbook with just the default settings and it has a polished and professional look.You can opt for their boiler-plate formatting or select from a variety of adjustments in Layout and Design. In this section you can tweak the settings to change the layout of the recipe, adjusting the fonts/display of the title, contributor section, ingredient section, and comments section. There is also the option to fill in white space with either graphics or quotations for a more professional look. Other options allow you to select dividers for cookbook sections, write an introduction, dedication, or forward, and select printing options if you want to print hard copies of your cookbook. You can also insert custom pages.The website makes it very simple to invite cookbook collaborators. You type in their name and their email address and you are done. An email will be sent to them with a link and instructions on how to log in and get started. They provide text for the letter, which--of course--you can adjust as desired. You can even easily send reminders to all of your collaborators the same way.I have not yet printed a physical cookbook, but you can do this directly on the website. You can choose from a 5 1/2" x8 1/2" or 8 1/2" x 11". As of now, they only print cookbooks with a Plastikoil binder, but they may have more options in the future. There are also options for marketing your cookbook and even listing it on Amazon, if you purchase the additional Cookbook Fundraiser Marketing Kit.This may not be what you are looking for if you are a culinary professional and you want all the publishing bells and whistles to make an artisan cookbook. However, for groups, families, and friends who want to come together to create a cookbook, I don't think there is a better site or a better or easier way to make an attractive, collaborative cookbook that you and your family can be proud of. This cookbook making kit is so much fun and so awesome for me, a beginner. I do not know what all is out there to use and I have never thought of looking. With this all you need are the recipes. It gives you cover designs, layouts, and everything you need to create amazing cookbooks! I have been looking for a DIY cookbook in every store expecting to handwrite recipes in it for most of my life, not now! I can create and have a cookbook ready for print in a week! I am so happy I got this! It is easy to use. I immediately logged in, created my account, made a cookbook title, found the cover I wanted, and added my first recipe right away. So easy! You can also mark your stuff private or invite family and friends to add theirs as well! This is a game-changer in my house! Highly recommend! You can change the order yo want things listed like the recipe order - in the layout & design area you choose your font, if you want photo first or after recipe, you can choose to have contributor listed, force recipe to one page, you can adjust the margin and pg #s. You can even add in filler photos. There are lots of options starting at home page. I am excited to get this project completed!
