Ordered this twice and both times it was shipped damaged because of lousy packaging. I ended up keeping the 2nd one because the damage with in the back and interior where it couldn't be seen and, frankly, given it's weight it was extremely inconvenient to repackage and ship back a 2nd time. Also, some of the fasteners were broken in both shipments, but in the 2nd, I was able to get the thing together without all of the parts. In addition, the directions for assembly are terrible and mostly guesswork because only a few of the parts are labeled (and some mislabeled). The drawer locking mechanism jams and doesn't work so I just took it out. I would NOT recommend this even though I kept the 2nd shipment. It wasn't worth the price or the headache.

The product was to be assembled. The driver could hardly unload from the truck with a dolly. The product was refused, and credit was not issued as of 2/11/25. Order date 1/19.25. To add to the problem, I still have not received a refund

Really heavy, heavy duty filing cabinet that requires a tedious amount of assembly. The assembly was straightforward with clear instructions, but definitely goes quicker with help. For the price and size of the cabinet the quality is good enough. It’s sturdy, looks professional and gets the job done.

There's a cartoon meme going around where a guy walks into an office for an IKEA job interview and the man behind the desk points towards a pile of chair pieces, saying "Please have a seat."I was up til 3:30 last night assembling this file cabinet, and I feel like it was designed to test my every skill in furniture assembly. All the usual suspects were there:Wood dowelsMachine screwsspinning cams and their connecting metal cam dowelsThose short fat screws you only see in DIY furnitureFIVE different types and sizes of screws with pointy endsand so much more.It was like someone designed this thing after somebody else challenged him to incorporate ALL the fastener types. And there were some new ones - something called a "Twist-Lock Fastener".It worked, but it wasn't the easiest to deal with. There were many instances where I had to join two large sections together (with both wood dowels and these Twist-Locks), and things didn't want to line up easily. It wasn't a simple "put your finger in there to make it work" situation. I had to figure out which of the four or more connecting items wasn't lining up, reach in with a flat head screwdriver, tap or push it into alignment, and then figure out a way to coax the pieces together.Had they used the standard cam hardware, things might have moved together more easily.I WANTED to hit things with a rubber mallet, but it's all MDF - engineered fiberboard that won't hold up like wood or plywood.Fortunately I happened to have a ridiculously long tension clamp, which allowed me to slowly force the pieces together tight enough to where I could tighten those Twist-Locks.I honestly don't know what I would have done without that clamp.Even then, the metal receiver parts of those twist-locks was not the best quality - at least one stripped out on me (resulting in little metal shards on the floor).Thankfully it happened at the end of the tightening and the thing still held.Once the cabinet housing was assembled, I started in on the drawers. These began with an interesting technique that I haven't seen for a while:you take tapered edges on the two side pieces, place them into grooves on either side of the drawer face plate, cantilever them up to a 90 degree angle on either side of the face plate, and then the floor piece is inserted - effectively holding them apart. No fasteners involved. Why?The instructions were well-written.I had no questions about any of the steps once I understood each step detailed in the booklet.I DID take issue with the fact that MANY of the pieces had NO identifying marks. There were none of those ubiquitous number or letter stickers.OH WAIT, there was ONE...on probably the one piece that didn't need to be labeled because it was different from all the rest. And THAT sticker was huge!Again, WHY?Once everything was together I placed the drawers in the cabinet and it all looked great. The keyed lock worked without fail. I had read other reviews complaining about that, so I tightened that sucker down hard with a pair of needlenose vise grip pliers. The only hitch now is that the interlock mechanism isn't totally reliable(that thing that only allows you to open one drawer at a time - so your toddler can't turn the file cabinet into a disastrous makeshift staircase). Once every 5-10 pulls of one drawer and then the other results in the thing not functioning, so I have to reach in with a finger and release it. Not what I want my family members to have to do, as it might result in injury.Finish:The whole cabinet looks good, although the MDF doesn't take a beating well. It will ding - resulting in raw MDF fibers showing through. A few edges of the pieces came damaged in that way. Fortunately they were not areas visible once it was assembled.I do find it telling that a brown marker came in the kit of fasteners and small parts.Weight:Gadzooks! This is a heavy piece. It was NOT easy to move while still in the box either.I had to grab a friend to help move it into the room it was going to be living.I suppose we won't have to worry about someone picking it up and taking off with it.Price:Mmm. It's a bit much for something that requires such work to assemble.I have assembled a LOT of items over the years. This felt like "the final test" of my skills - complete with having to figure out which piece was which (several times).I like the cabinet, but if I were in charge of the company behind it, I'd:- drop the price a bit- improve the finish quality of the exterior pieces- do away with those cheap Twist-Lock fasteners- fire the guy who thought it was a good idea to turn a simple DIY assembly and turn it into an aptitude test.

I read the reviews before I ordered this one, but based on the quality of the Sauder brand, I ordered it anyway. Yes, it is made with MDF, but so is about 90% of the manufactured office furniture that you get today. I started assembling it last night and even with interruptions, I finished in under two hours. The components were well packed and well padded. The hardware was packed in a labeled plastic packet and were easy to access and understand what goes where. Some of the wood parts were labeled and some were not, but the diagram in the instructions made it easy to ascertain what each piece was.The instructions are very good. Each step is laid out with the items needed and actions to be taken. It looks a little intimidating at first because the instruction book is so long, but you only use half the book and several pages are reserved for parts lists and diagrams. Overall, one of the best instruction manuals I have seen. If you just follow the instructions, assembly is quite easy.I used an impact driver with a phillips head bit, a hammer, and an adjustable wrench. The order of assembly made perfect sense and this is so well designed that you don't have to move the assembly until it is time to put the top on. I appreciate the attention that went into this design because so many items you assemble have you moving them around with every step. Not this one.The hardest part was getting the top in place. You are working on aligning three sides at once and it took a little time to do that. But once I did, it was easy to lock the top into place. The drawer assembly was easy as well. Somehow I ended up missing three screws. I think I had them at one point and just lost them--probably threw the bag they were in back in the box for disposal--but I had similar screws that I used for that part. The lock was a little tricky in that there is one piece that is not shown in the blown up diagram. It goes on just before the latch and screw in the back and holds the latch into place. I figured it out pretty quickly with a little experimentation. The finished product is quite nice. Because of the weight of the loaded drawers there is a lot of unused space in the back of the cabinet. I suppose I could hide something in there for safe keeping. My expectation is that the extra depth is needed to assure that the cabinet doesn't tip when opening the loaded top drawer.Anyway, my overall assessment is that the cabinet is a good one. It's not a premium quality, solid oak cabinet and it is not priced as one. It's a good quality, MDF cabinet that you see in the vast majority of offices that I've been in lately. It will be a great addition to my home office and should serve me for years to come.
