This thing is flimsy & did not hold my tea leaves. Fortunately I was able to use reward points to pay for this. I wound up finding a mesh strainer that did a better job. I threw the tea ball away. Hot garbage.

All tea balls were not created equal. I tried two others: one arrived completely squashed, as it was only encased in a plastic package and sent in a plastic Amazon envelop. The other was advertised as 3: but was only 2,75".This one is perfect. It is exactly 3" in diameter, it came in its own little box which protected it even though it also came in Amazon's plastic one, it has a great shiny silver color, and the mesh is fine enough to hold all the particles I need it to hold.

These have been put to use daily for over a month and are holding up well. No rust.

I like loose leaf and for many years mixed it directly with the water in the teapot. When water is poured over the leaves in the pot, they usually sink to the bottom and do not make their way into your cup. However, the tea gets stronger and more astringent as you come back for a second or third cup. And for making a single cup, I never found a good way to get the leaves to settle out. So I decided to try the tea balls to control the steeping process in the pot, or to make single cups. I ended up ordering all four different sizes of tea balls made by Norpro: 1-3/4, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch diameter. In general, the Norpro balls are well made and serve the intended purpose well. I also had previously purchased some generic brand tea balls of similar design, but cheaply made with a loose fit. The Norpro balls are of better quality and worth the slight extra expense. The stainless steel is bright and generally has closer fitting parts. In two of the tea balls I received, the closure of the two halves was not perfect, but I think this is common with these mesh balls. It's easy to fix with an adjustable wrench or pliers. Visually identify the gap and determine which half is not lying perfectly flat on the rim; then take the pliers and gently grip the edge to bend it slightly to the right position. I was able to get a perfect closure this way. As to the sizes - the diameter is to outer edge of the closure rim, not the ball itself. You can really only add tea to one side of the ball, as it's hard to close tight when tea is filled into both halves, because it spills out as you try to close it. The 1-3/4" diameter is well-sized for an individual cup, unless you make tea very strong. The 2" diameter works well in small tea pots (typical 2 cup size), although it's small enough top fit in a tea cup also. The 2-1/2" diameter is good for medium size tea pots (typically, 4-6 cups). I had to return the 3" diameter ball because it was too large for my 6 cup Betty Brown teapot, the largest I have. However, it would be fine if you have larger teapots. In general, just measure the limiting dimension of the tea pot lid and get the largest tea ball that will fit.
