Not deep enough. The part shattered upon first use. I wouldn't recommend it.

My troy-bilt mowers steering has been sloppy since I bought it used last year, but then the steering totally failed while I was mowing! The gears were rubbing past eachother but not engaging so I initially thought I stripped the rack and pinion gears but luckily it was just a badly worn out bushing! It took a bit of finesse to get this to sit into place as it's not the easiest thing to access. After putting everything back together the steering is WAY tighter. I then adjusted the tie rods to remove some more slop and now it starts turning almost immediately and no more skipping gears.

Perfect OEM fit, as easy to install as original parts and excellent value for your money. Small engine shops will charge upwards of $20 for this small simple part.

The new bearing appears to be made of brass whereas the old one was plastic. My mowers steering is nice and tight and no more slipping gears!

Replaced a plastic bushing on a Cub Cadet 1500 series. Not an easy job, without some tools and effort. Fits perfectly, eliminating play or loss of steering.

Had steering issue on a Toro lx420. Googled it and it says it's a common issue and that this hex flange was the culprit. I did have to remove the mower deck to get easy access but that was pretty much it. took about 15 minutes and it worked like a champ!

My White-LT165 is really an MTD and uses this part. As others say, the basic design won't last forever. The teeth are not big enough for the forces and the plastic hex-bushing wears. Next the steering "slips", then it "strips", and steering control goes from bad to worse. At this point you need both the new shaft AND the new hex bushing. If you use the new shaft with the old bushing, it will "work" but soon fail again.Apparently some MTD tractors make this job very tough. My White-LT165 was not so awful. The bottom bolt was hex-head, not the impact-driven Phillips that other users curse at. (Maybe mine was replaced before?) While the MTD manual has you take-off the deck, hood, sides, gas-tank, etc, I was able to do the job just by loosening the side-panels to take off the plastic dashboard. While that bottom bolt is a pain, I put a Vice-Grips on it blind, then turned the steering wheel-- unscrewed easily.Clean the big gear in the bottom of the frame, then slather with oil or light grease. Friction here is not fatal but does no good. The new shaft, new bushing, and both washers should be generously blessed with a tough grease (I used disc-brake grease). Set the hex washer and be sure it sits, set the greased flat washer, then slide the new shaft through. Grease bottom cone washer's shiny side, then install bottom bolt (install steering wheel temporarily so you can really honk that bolt tight).Someone said this part makes his tractor steer like a Cadillac. Well, no, it steers like a low-price tractor! But at least I don't have to slip-slip-slip the stripped gear and worry that I'll hit the fence or go off into the ditch. Very pleased with this shaft and hex-bushing.

This part seems to last about 4 years in my riding mower before it gets so worn that I can no longer steer. The center wears excessively and the created slack means the steering gear wont stay engaged. It is relatively easy to install. Just pulled the drained gas tank out and to the side (stayed connected to fuel line). Remove but at end of steering column from underneath. I greased it up this time and will see if this increases it's life.I have amazon prime and this was an addon item which ticked me off. So I bought something else from my wish list and I'll be darned if Amazon didn't ship this stupid thing separately on a different day. What is the point of an addon item then if you are going to ship it separately with a different carrier!!! That's just STUPID Amazon!
