I’m a welder and fabricator at a structural steel shop. I’ve been in the trade for over 9 years now and I’ve used DeWalt, Bosch, Makita, and other grinders. I’ve always been intrigued by brushless tech in drills but never had a brushless grinder because I wasn’t sure they’d have the ‘umpf’ of a regular brushed motor. I’m here to tell you, this grinder exceeded my expectations. This grinder has smooth power. It’s smaller body makes for a comfortable grip and easy maneuverability. I may be grinding on a big beam or heavy wall tubing, then switch to doing fine detail weld finishing. This tool handles it all with aplomb. I was concerned the 8500rpm would be too slow but I have yet to bog it down and see any depreciable difference in power output. It’s so smooth I don’t even turn it down when doing fine detail work, only for safety when using a wire wheel. I cannot say enough about the quality of this tool. I could’ve gotten an 11 amp DeWalt for nearly half the price, (not variable speed.) The added electronic/speed controls and kickback prevention features are an added bonus.Final thought - if you’re looking for a new 4 1/2” grinder and can afford the expense, stop shopping around, don’t waste any more time comparing tools, and buy this grinder. I’m a convert. I’m a Metabo man now. You won’t be disappointed! It deserved all five stars from me.

Excellent ergonomics, smaller grip and easier to hold and manipulate. Variable speed is a huge advantage. Can use for many different applications.

We ordered 3 grinders in April 2023...2 of them had a burnt out motor by July 2023. We sent them off for warranty repair and received estimates for both a month later for $113 repair work. No response to the question about honoring their warranty. We've used these grinders for decades and the quality and customer service is just no longer existent. We'll be looking for a new brand next time.

I got several electric grinder over the years but this one I like the most because is very handy sizewise is not bulky like my other grinders. The only thing I notice from day one I used it everytime I plug it in I can see small spark to the plug as soon as it touches the inside of the outlet!

Brushless and speed reducing option with anti kick and auto off safety during power failure. (won't kick on when plugged back into power if switch was left on.) Makes a whining noise at higher RPM but after a year or more using my first one of these I bought 2 more. Brushless is a great advantage and speed reducing is a must as well for metal grinding and cutting. Also great for wood sanding too. I prefer a paddle switch so it turns off when I let go of the grinder but with the anti kick (works great) it makes for a pretty safe operation anyways. I have yet to drop this grinder, it is kinda heavy but not as bad as other variable speed grinders I have used and not so light weight as to break in a few months like the cheap tools from ... Getting them on sale at $150 is a pretty good buy, $200 sucks but if I needed one I would pay that before buying a $50 single speed grinder.

I am a professional stonemason I've owned lots of different grinders this grinder is smaller and lighter but just as powerful. It does not get hot all the other grinders have brushes they get hot this is brushless. I've only owned this for six or seven weeks I use it almost everyday it's the best grinder I've ever had. I've been using grinders for 40 years. Runs very smooth I love the adjustable speed dial. It has six numbers it goes from one through six for the speed setting but you can set it anywhere in between any of those numbers. I highly recommend it. I don't know how long it will last so I renew this in a year or two if it breaks down and can't be repaired or if it doesn't

I expected this grinder to be epic.— But it’s just okay. I thought it would be thinner than my other grinders, but I’ve pictured it next to my 4.5” makita and it’s about the same. It’s just a lot longer and heavier. The material on the casing is very slippery. I had to hold it even tighter than slightly larger bodied grinders, so cut up 60 grit sanding discs and glued them to the casing. Grip is good now.-Then, after about a week of full time use, it has started to randomly loose RPMs and then rev back to full speed. It’s not consistent.-The vibration is about the same as my other grinders.-The power is great at any RPMI guess I can handle the weight and length, and with the grip issue being fixed, it’s fine.BUT- that random RPM change is aggravating and dangerous. When I called the tech at Metabo he suggested I return it for a replacement, but Amazon had none available. Instead, I was refunded, and I don’t think I’ll buy it again. It does not seem worth it to me to go brushless, and pay the extra money in this case.I’m not impressed. — not upset, but not impressed.***June 2021 update:The intermittent rpm problem became worse over a 6 month period, and I put the grinder away, thinking I’d have it repaired if it ever became convenient to take it to one of the Metabo recommended repair shops, 3 hours away.Instead, I ended up taking it to a local repair shop, to see if Metabo would still honor the warranty. They did. The whole rear assembly of the grinder had to be replaced: everything behind the motor. Now, it is my primary 5” hard wheel grinder, and I occasionally switch out a wire wheel when I’d like to slow it down and do detail work. — changing the rating from an original 2 star to a 4 star rating. A grippy casing would make it a 5 star product.Jacob Dean
