3.5 stars. The bottoming tap is so-so, but the taper tap is poorly made and has some of the worst grinding burrs I’ve seen. If you inspect with a magnifying glass, you can’t see any cutting edges, just rows of broccoli. These are big taps and they need to be sharp.

This thing is in the cheesiest-butt bad-arcade-prize box, and I was really expecting something more solid for what I paid for it. I'll update later with a performance test.

This tool worked like a dream right out of the box. It got to me 6 days early, so I went right to my shop. Little tung oil and I was making wooden threads like a pro. I ordered some hardwood dowels also, and they really threaded nicely. Props to the seller for such a fast delivery.

I've used the 1-1/4" tap and also die on oak and they did a nice job at making threads (using 1-1/4" Oak Dowels and holes drilled with Forstner Bit in oak boards). I found it works best to soak the area to be tapped in Boiled Linseed Oil overnight to reduce chips and break-out of threads. I tried tapping after soaking in the oil for less than an hour and it still worked but was harder to turn the die and resulted in more chips in the threads.I also tried tapping using a pine 2 x 4 and it worked fairly well, even in the softwood.-Steve

I needed a hand powered tool to thread dowels and holes on Poplar and oak wood. This works great if you take your time and soften the wood with water before working it.
