After using this lock for two and a half weeks, I have finally figured out how to retract it fully and easily. I'm mostly writing this review to let others know too.The problem is that the retraction depends on some oomph in the mechanism (I don't know the exact terminology). So If you try to retract it slowly while guiding it so it doesn't flip around wildly, it won't go all the way back in. If you just let it flip around wildly, someone is likely to get hurt, because the lock head is heavy duty (RIP my right middle knuckle). What you need to do is hold the lock head right by the spot it goes into, and then press the button. This allows it to retract fully without flipping wildly.A few other notes:- This little guy is strong. It looks dinky, but it holds on tight. I have been using mine on my daily commute, which usually means using it to chain my suitcase to the mostly-empty luggage compartment at the bottom of a charter bus. When I get off the bus, it's clear that the suitcase has been jerked around, but the lock is holding on strong. (I've figured out a way to keep the suitcase from moving around so much so it won't continue to strain the lock, but I am impressed that the lock has done its job.)- This guy is a time saver. When studying in public places like libraries, all I have to do is pop my laptop back into my suitcase and use this lock to chain it to something when I need to go to the restroom. I don't have to pack everything up and drag it with me, and I don't have to worry about my spot being taken when I return.- The only real tricky thing is figuring out how to lock and unlock the mechanism. Once you get the hang of it, however, it goes really smoothly. First, you put the key in and twist while also pressing down. This gets the X shape of the key to align into a I shape. Then you put it in the lock, twist, and twist again to remove the key.All in all, I'd highly recommend it, especially with the Kensington SecureTrek Laptop Roller, which is the suitcase I use it with. (I'm not as enthusiastic about the suitcase, and this is not a review for it, but it is one of the few of its kind - lockable, commutable, small but holds a lot - that I have found.)

I bought this for use with my new MacBook Pro. Of all the notebook lock/cable options on Amazon, I picked this one because it was retractable and thus less of a pain to haul around. The cable is thin enough that it wouldn't stop the most determined thief, but I highly doubt someone's gonna whip out a cable cutter or break the furniture my lock is tethered to while it's in the middle of a coffee shop or library. So it's strong enough for my needs.Where it disappoints is the length of the cable and the poor retraction. You actually need to be closer than four feet from a table leg (or whatever you're tethering your laptop to), and it's pretty much impossible to get the cord to fully retract. I don't mean that it wouldn't fully retract after I'd been using it for awhile, I mean it wouldn't do so right out of the box. I wouldn't buy one again, but this thing still has a smaller footprint in my bag than a regular, thicker security cable, so I (somewhat begrudgingly) kept it.

I bought this lock a few months back to lockup my laptop at customer sites when traveling for business. When I received the lock, I messed around with it for 5 minutes or so and could not get it to work. The lock would not open. I didn't have much time to mess with it. So, here I am today, messing with it again because I have more travel coming up. Guess what, I still cannot get it to unlock with either of the keys. I've tried it on 3 laptops. And yes, I am in IT and I have worked with these types of locks many of times in the past. So, now what? Packaging is long gone, and I've yet to use it a single time. Having spend 30 minutes screwing with it- what a waste. If you buy one, test it ASAP.

This is a great locking cable. Very small and portable. It is the same size as my Logitech VX nano mouse and fits perfectly into a pocket in my laptop bag.The retractable cable is solid and doesn't get hung up when retracting. My only cons:-Short cable that is only good if you laptop is with in a few feet of a place to wrap it around. But this is understandable with such a compact size.-Bulky and overly long keys take up too much space on a keychain.
