This review is for ISBN-13: 978-0-495-48931-4 et al, a hardcover printing of LOTR in the usual three volumes, in fine chocolate brown cloth bindings each engraved with a motif of the Eye of Mordor and the One Ring, published by Houghton Mifflin in Boston MA. This set is sold by Juniper Books whose only addition is custom-designed and very attractive dust jackets for each volume which form a combined theme when the books are seen together on the shelf.Buyers outside the USA need to understand that the volumes will be shipped from Juniper Books on the West Coast of the USA to wherever you live, so allow for additional shipping and delivery time. The books are OK but no more than that. The text is of Christopher Tolkien’s 1982 revision which corrected some typographical errors, omissions and inconsistencies in prior editions of his father’s masterpiece but is NOT the superior and more substantial re-set of 2002, let alone the even-better one of 2014. The books are of a decent size and easy to read but other editions are superior in this regard, especially the superlative (and so far unmatched IMHO) Harper Collins publication of 2002-2004 with award-winning artist Alan Lee’s fabulous watercolour-painted illustrations throughout, and the similar Harper-Collins 4-volume set (including ‘The Hobbit) from 2020, almost identical to the 2002-2004 publication but with the volumes physically smaller and the pages of marginally less heavy stock. The 2020 boxed set edition is still on sale worldwide through the amazon network at less than half the price of this older version of the text from Juniper Books.Juniper’s USP is the very fine, originally-designed smoky-black dust jackets (you may order a white variant of the same design instead) which are striking, attractive and genuinely different but there is no slip case/box to contain the three volumes and the text, layout and typeface do not compare with other modern editions of LOTR.This Juniper Books edition contains no illustrations, but each volume does contain one of Tolkien’s fold-out maps attached inside the rear board. All in all, these Houghton Mifflin editions of LOTR sold by Juniper Books are for the dedicated completist/collector only – that is, if you don’t mind paying double the price of the superior sets published by Harper Collins in recent years.

Books are large, sturdy, and the custom jackets look great both together and individually. Each book comes with a map of Middle-Earth relevant to the story (though the maps for Fellowship and The Two Towers appears to be the same because of this, Return of The King has a more in depth map surround the area near and in Mordor). The maps are actually attached to the books themselves in the back, I wanted them separate and it’s a clean tear to get them out. I highly recommend this set for any Tolkien fans looking for a LoTR collection to buy. Literally no negative qualities to mention.

I gave these to my fiancé as a birthday present as his last set of LOTR was destroyed when he was younger. I’ve had my eyes on Juniper books for a long time and these are IMMACULATE!!! He LOVED them! They look beautiful and are the best present

Preparing to retire, I listed books I would like to reread and read for the first time. I decided my first re-read would be LOTR. To celebrate the event I thought I would actually buy the books not just have them on my Kindle. Then I saw these, I purchased the black version and they are exactly what I hoped for. The books themselves are beautifully bound so that you can easily read without breaking their spines, and the covers are of a good quality paper. They truly feel like a celebration to read. Thank you.

I purchased the LOTR "Sauron" inspired covers as a gift for a friend who is a huge fan of Tolkien and Middle Earth. They loved the set and the books look absolutely gorgeous on their shelves. I've purchased several Juniper Books sets and collections for myself and gifted more. They are always the perfect gift to connect with a loved one.
