I don’t believe these are genuine leather. If they are made of hide at all, I’m guessing it’s shredded and bonded fibers. There is no leather smell. There are no oil spots on the paper it was wrapped in. If these were genuine, heavily oiled leather, you would have both, no matter how well they were wiped down. The underside has a fibrous look to it but when scratched with a thumbnail the fibers stay together as if glued instead of being able to raise up a fiber or two as in genuine leather. Overall, they have a more rubbery feel than genuine leather. They don’t even behave like real leather. If you note the keeps in my photos, they are all uniform in their roundness, unlike genuine leather. They feel springy when pushed down. All edges have a black rubbery looking substance sealing them, like on the edge of a purse strap. Now I’ve seen some tack finished with a black edge, but it is a dye not shiny and plasticky looking like this. My guess is in a little while it will start peeling off. The buckles are plated and will not hold up. The plating will get dinged, and it will rust. The only good things I can say is from a distance, new, they look nice, and the stitching is neatly done. One of my biggest pet peeves is businesses trying to deceive the customer into thinking they are getting genuine leather when it’s really PU or some other fake material. When it comes to horse tack you don’t want inferior materials, your safety depends on it.

These are lovely reins for the price point, I am honestly pleasantly surprised. The leather is very supple, not stiff at all, the stain is nice and rich and even, and no blemishes or uneven cuts/edges. The coating on the edges is a nice touch, and the buckles all look good quality. They came in a nice box. My ONLY gripe is that the bit stops aren't removable, so you will have to permanently cut them off if you want them gone. But I'm not marking down for that because that seems to be the norm for reins with bit stops for some reason. I've always had to cut mine off.
