How can you tell the Fuel Tank Filler Cap/gas cap needs replaced?
1.Cap does not tighten properly
Most Fuel Tank Filler Cap/gas caps are designed to click once they are tightened sufficiently. If the cap does not click, or clicks and then pops loose again then that may be a sign that it may need to be replaced.
2.Fuel smell from the vehicle
If the Fuel Tank Filler Cap/gas cap seal becomes damaged or worn it may cause fuel vapors from the gas tank to leak from the filler neck. This may result in a gasoline odor from the vehicle as a result of the escaping vapors.
3.Check Engine Light comes on
A bad or failing fuel cap will not necessarily cause major performance issues, but it can set off the Check Engine Light, which will prevent the vehicle from passing an emissions test. If you suspect that your gas cap may be having an issue, please take a minute to check the gas

New cap caused check engine light p1456. Was fine before I changed it. Put a genuine Honda gas cap on my 2002 Civic and problem went away. By the time I figured it out, was beyond the return window.

Good seal on it. Waiting to see if it resolved a different issue for me. But so far, no check engine light has returned. Fits perfectly on 2004 Honda Civic.

I got the dreaded emissions code recently about vapor leak and figured it was the gas cap that went bad. I originally purchased a cheaper gas cap and then cleared the code only to have the check engine light come back on two days later. An original Honda cap was around $50 so I decided to try this one which was only a couple dollars more than the first one that didn't work, I noticed right away that the gasket was different. Well I cleared the code again then put this gas cap on and the check engine light has not come back since so obviously this manufacturer used a higher quality gasket on the cap and I saved over $30 over buying the original Honda cap. Great Product!

The aftermarket gas cap turned off the check engine light right away. The OEM gas cap is four times the cost of this Amazon sourced part.
