This seems to be a very good quality harness. It is double insulated - the regular colored insulation and a clear insulation on top of that. Probably for UV protection, but I'm not sure.

I used this connector with a mating one to carry 40 amps of 12v current, using the outside wires for ground and the inside ones for power. The only mild negative is that the wire ends were pre-stripped too deeply leaving only about half the copper wires. I cut them off there and re-stripped them.

The CURT 58040 Wiring Harness was just what I needed to make a custom wire adapter for my vehicle. It worked perfectly and made my project a breeze. Highly recommend!

Used this as replacement for the 4 pin connector on my '05 Ram 1500. The factory connector was so corroded the metal had turned green and brittle, never worked right at all. Cut the connector off, removed some of the tubing to get better access and stripped the wires. I stripped the wires on the CURT harness and used crimp butt connectors, I rather had soldered the connections but that is always a future option. I put clear heatshrink over each connection to keep water out then as extra protection wrapped the whole thing in a few layers tightly of electrical tape. Instead of letting the new connector hang under the hitch receiver and get destroyed again I ran it through the routing hole next to my license plate on the rear bumper. Looped up the excess wire and ziptied it incase I ever need a longer run of wire to a trailer. I used a zip tie just tight enough between the wires to hold the dust cover I cleaned and cut off from my old 4 pin connector. I did test each connection and everything works perfectly as it should, no more intermittent or non functional trailer lights. No more 7 pin to 4 pin adapter when my 4 pin should work just fine, now I have a brand new one. For price there is nothing better, may I add each wire has an extra layer of clear insulation around it, nice touch. You will want to buy the CURT dust cover made for this, I had forgotten to. I would say all 4 wires are about 16 gauge, on my factory wiring the 3 power wires are 16 gauge and the ground is a larger 14 gauge. I don't see any real issue with all 4 wires being 16 gauge, have had no issues, seems like quality copper or copper clad.
