The development of the new PLANTEX high-tech compound has resulted in the production of the first flap discs in the world with a backing plate made of natural hemp. In addition to excellent material, the discs offer maximum operator safety, high abrasion and long service life protection of natural resources and environmental friendliness. The fiber substrate of the PLANTEX high-tech compound gives it absorbent, spring-like properties that enhance grinding performance. This flexibility provides a greater contact surface area with the work piece (more grit is used) that results in higher material removal. The larger contact surface area also dissipates more heat, making the grinding work cooler – the work piece does not suffer smearing and the abrasive fabric does not burn. The backing plate used on PLANTEX flap discs is fully trimmable and reduces in diameter automatically during grinding. It can also be trimmed with cutting tools, a process that is simple and straightforward. The PLANTEX Spitfire flap disc can be used down to the last flap of the RZ Zirconum abrasive – and saves you money in the process! The superior strength values of this high-tech compound are achieved through a patented new treatment (“impact method”) for hemp fibers. Hemp fiber high-tech compound is an almost ideal base material for flap disc backing plates – it is flexible, heat-absorbent (for low grinding temperatures), very easy to trim, safe to use and easy to dispose of. The cavities of the hemp fiber structure, have a highly insulating, damping and noise-reducing effect, thus enhancing the safety features of the discs. The PLANTEX flap disc is patented and made in Germany. Get the most out of your PLANTEX Flap Discs by using them on the Varilex WSF 1800 Professional Electric Blending and Polishing Tool. I'm not sure what hemp based has to do with a grinding wheel but they work great as an abrasive and they are quite cost effective. Thread right on a 5/8-11 standard grinder thread. I got the 40 grit and they are doing just fine

Notes: 1) The ad describes the backing material as “made from 70% natural hemp”. It sort of looks and feels like Bakelite, presumably reinforced with hemp fibers. Every other sanding disc like this I have seen has steel backing material. I don’t know how durable these plastic ones will be, but I can confirm that the wheel I tested spun up to 8000 RPM on my grinder with no problem. 2) The guys in the shop where I work call these “flap disks” and they really like them. I don’t have much experience with them, but I can confirm the one I tested will clean a steel surface to bare metal in seconds. 3) Excellent fit on my grinder and no excessive vibration when running. 4) My disks arrived arrived promptly. However, the thin paper box that contained them was crushed, and the plastic shrink wrap holding them together was broken. The disks themselves were completely undamaged. The seller may wish to consider using sturdier packaging. 5) One sentence in the ad states “Maximum RPM 13,200.” Another states “Maximum rotational speed 8000 RPM”. I don’t know which is correct, but the ad needs to be edited to give the correct maximum rated speed in both locations. Obviously, I won’t run these above 8000 RPM just to be safe.

Most people don't seem to know that flap disks come in 2 major styles-Flat and angled. The flat ones have a flat face, the angled ones have a slight angle to the face, and the edges are farther back than the center so you can hold them at more of an angle without them digging in. These have an interesting backing, they're constructed flat, but the backing is flexible so you can press down on it a bit and it flexes away from the surface and cuts like the angled flap disks. Basically, they work as both. They cut similarly to the Norton disks I usually use and so far don't seem different in durability, so that's a plus. The flexibility means that you can be more ham-fisted and still not gouge the surface. So far I'm happy

When I got this I did not understand what was supposed ot be so great about this hemp based backing. I had ot read this page a couple of times to catch on.Simply put the backing side of the disc flexes towards the oustide allowing you to use more flap disc surface area in certain situations. I can;t really think what situatiosn those would be as I am used to holding my grinder at the right angle to use the near entirety of the grinding surface. It's not like it allows you to use more pressure than a ridgid backing, so unsure how much more useful this is more than a product gimmick. The flap discs work great though. They work as well as any I have ever used and I go through more than a few of these a year. I am very pleased with the work performance. The packaging these come in is so brittle and pointless they might as well have just tossed them in a freezer storage back and it would have arrived safer. And the little pasteboard box cannot heandle this much weight in any way shape or form.To the maker of this product, BETTER PACKAGING! These discs deserve enough respect to get to your consumers so they can ALL arrive. I was fortunate and all 10 arrived.Especially at this price, these need to arrive intact and ready to use.Anyway, very good perfomance, and horrible packaging!

These fit into my Ryobi cordless grinder fine, and spun up to 9000 RPM without issue. The discs I tried out spun cleanly without vibration. The material works really well for grinding steel, and after a number of uses didn't appear to have much wear. The Plantex backing is different than I'm used to, but appears to hold up fine. I like that these are made in Germany, and have a very high quality feel to them.My package arrived in perfect condition, with 10 discs. However these were shrink wrapped together and placed in a thin cardboard box, inside another cardboard box. It seems they could have been damaged easily if the box were dropped hard.

The product itself is ok, but there seems to be an Amazon warehouse problem. Two out of the three times I've ordered these, I've received an open pack with 9 flap discs instead of 10. It's too much of a pain to return them for a replacement (this seems to be the only option) and I need them now anyway, so my loss.
