When you get used to using a ruler like this it is invaluable. I have been using these for over 40 years. I was in the heating and air conditioning and sheet metal field. And doing woodworking for a hobby. Always get the inside rule so you can lay it flat on something.

I have been buying and using this style of rule for more than forty years, always buying in person. This is the first one I've ordered online (Amazon), and it is not useable. The individual wooden parts were nor affixed into the metal hinges evenly, with the result of one side reading nearly 1/8" different than opening the other way. Also, on one side, the printing did not go all the way to the end of the wooden rule, so I suppose Lufkin just wants you to forget that 1/4" on one side and add back the missing 1/8" on the other.

this is one of the best models of a folding rule available (along with the 1066D Engineer's model). like other reviewers on similar items have observed, i can't really see why anyone would want an outside reading rule. the convenience and simplicity of inside reading is far faster and more efficient and accurate. this one has two inch-scales, both inside reading, and read directly from the right OR left, respectively. this is about as practical and useful as you can get in one of these.the ends are also labled as such - not in relation to the scale it's printed on, but on which end to 'open' to read for that direction (slightly confusing at first). another advantage of the inside reading format is that the most used areas of the rule are protected from wear and tear, rather than getting the most of it as with an outside read.a very enjoyable, practical, and useful old school measuring tool with a well thought out format.
