My fat tire mountain bike headset would always get loose. I bought another one of those caged bearing headsets and still got loose. On those cheap ones the top and bottom cups don't even press in much or not at all.For a few dollars more the sealed bearing headsets are a no brainer. The steering never felt so good. Yes I only own low end bikes but now it feels like a higher end bike.They shouldn't even bother making those caged bearing headsets anymore. At least for the 44mm I am using

These bearings allowed me to use less compression to secure them in place and they are designed to take any play out of your steering post without a tremendous amount of pressure on the star nut. This is one of the best modifications you can do to your steering post make your bike handle better...

Works great as a budget cartridge bearing headset. Both crown races are split so no tools are needed to install them. Just make sure the cup adapter with the fat lip goes in the bottom.

It was a fair bit of work getting the bearing cups to seat. The OD's were irregular. The stem compression split ring has a shoulder that prevents the dust cap from seating, so likely the wrong part. It works without the dust cap in place and I will fiddle with later. It was cheap enough, so I can't whine too much.
