These are nice fused silica crucibles. However, it should be disclosed that they are not 100% impervious. Their porosity is about 8% (as their water absorption is 4 wt%). This is generally not a problem for dry calcining of powders, but this could end up being a major disaster when melting. Depending on the material being melted, duration of the melt, melt viscosity, etc. there is a possibility of the melt literally seeping through the crucible, potentially damaging one’s melting furnace. I needed a quartz crucible for melting some low viscosity glass, and these seemed very attractive for the price, but I will not be risking it and will now get a real fused quartz crucible with 0% porosity.On the positive side, this crucible has a reasonably good thermal shock resistance. The empty crucible could be brought to 1400C at 7C/min without any issues. It was then grabbed by cold stainless steel tongs, taken out of the furnace for a few seconds and then placed back into the furnace, all without breaking or cracking.
