They are exceptionally easy to use and require only 2 resistors to set the output voltage. Careful circuit design has resulted in outstanding load and line regulation — comparable to many commercial power supplies. The LM338 family is supplied in a standard 3-lead transistor package.

I used these in an application that takes a 12V 6A DC power supply and converts it into a 5V output. While it works great with currents of 0.5A or less, it did not work with loads requiring 2A at 5V. Any time the current got above 1A, the output voltage would begin to drop.I followed the LM338T data sheet and used a 270 Ohm and 820 Ohm resistors to get 5V at the output. But the current could not get above 1A while maintaining 5V. Even after using a much bigger heat sink it still could not produce more than 1A at 5V. I was disappointed.

I like the fact that the 3 terminal regulator rating is 5W.

Bought for a work project. Would run all day at 1.2A, but increasing my pump load and 2.8A burned them out in a few seconds. Will be buying from Digikey for the real thing

One reg I checked in a circuit I use for quick test on 3 term regs tested bad. That just happens some time. The rest were all worked ok and adjusted smooth without jitter. . reasonable price. Overall product was Ok and good value.

They look like and are marked as LM338T but they behave like LM317.Tested several from the package and they all behave the same. They regulate voltage fine but current limit at 1.5 Amps. If you want LM317s, buy LM317s, they cost less. These are clearly mismarked.

my input voltage is 19.5 volts using a 330 ohm resistor and a 10k pot i was only able to go down to 18.5 volts max. Tried a few others lm338's out of the same pack with same results. As a comparison I have another LM338 that i just had laying around .. with the same setup I am able to bring it down to 1 volt.
