I bought this to use as a display. It's well made and beautifully designed. The wooden box is nice for display. I don't think the box would be sturdy enough to carry around in your pocket, but suitable to display it in on a shelf. I haven't tested it for accuracy, but for display or a gift I would purchase it again.

The brass inside is decent but the wood case has problems. Most of the brass inlays are poorly done. Also a lot of filler has been used around the metal. The sanding is inadequate. I places the brass is too low, the sanding does not meet it, and so these sections are left as tarnished brass with some green while where the sanding does reach the brass gets cleaned and lacquered.

Received in the mail and the glass had a crack in it. Very disappointing as it was a birthday present for my dad.

Not sure about the inconsistent experiences on here. Mine is just as described and very well crafted. There are some good videos explaining how it works, but basically, open it up, unlock the compass needle, turn it to face north, and the shadow lines up with the time on the outer edge. In one of my pictures you can see that it indicates the time is a little after noon, which is when I took the photo.I've found it to be accurate to about 10-15 minutes, which is fine for a sun-dial. I'm not looking for atomic clock level accuracy here, especially since it will largely be ornamental. Also, that lever that you lift up on the side (on the left in the picture where I am holding it) is a protractor and is used to adjust your latitude (Declination), so, for example, if your latitude is 40 degrees north, you set the protractor to 40. I haven't really needed it since i'm not going for pin-point accuracy, but it is interesting. All in all, very happy with this purchase.

Arrived on time. This piece is absolutely gorgeous! Since I bought this as a birthday present for a friend I opted for the box purchase. Both are well crafted. The item is just beautifully detailed. Very happy customer!!
