The included bushing is too thick and the whole shaft will bind when you install it. It simply looks like a design oversight when it was engineered to copy the factory parts. The shaft should protrude past the bushing so that when the retaining nut and bolt is screwed in, it bottoms out on the shaft itself and not the bushing. If you install it as it comes, the retaining nut will be locked against the bushing and prevent the shaft from turning. Luckily I own a grinder and was able to grind the bushing thinner, this allowing the shaft to protrude past the bushing and prevent any binding. If you purchase this shaft you'll either have to reuse your old bushing, order a new factory bushing, or grind this bushing. The gear teeth themselves matched the factory profile and I had no issues once I fixed the bushing that it came with.

6-26-24 Last week, I finally installed the Steering Shaft & Bushing for my 1996 MTD Yard Machines Riding Mower w/ the Briggs & Stratton 14.5 OHV I/C (Industrial Commercial) Motor. The mower engine is Model:: 287707, Type: 022401, Code: 960725ZD. I know that because I went online years ago and spent a weekend defining and confirming my B&S engine in their Operating & Maintenance Instructions, and separately, the rest of the mower in the MTD Owner's Guide. Even then, there were 6 different body styles. There was also a mistake - the wrong part listed for my ball joint. And there were slight differences between the printed Owner's Guide and the online version. So, yes, you must choose your parts carefully. especially when you buy online. I always look to see if a part is returnable, what cost, if any, to do so, and when in doubt, I check other resources to see if they have the same parts info.It took me a long time to finish the steering shaft replacement for several reasons. I decided to drop the mower deck for easier access to the steering shaft bolt - which had a star head, NOT the phillips head I read elsewhere. And when I did that, I had access to the blades, and knew they needed sharpening. And while I had the deck off, it was the perfect time to grind off the rust since the last painting, and prime and paint both the outside and the inside of the deck. I got it looking newish. And I also had to remove the gas tank, and before doing so, I drained the gas into a can. At some point, I put on a new gas filter - universal size. And after I got the mower back together, as soon as I turned on the gas (a shutoff valve was installed years ago), gas filled the air cleaner, and probably the cylinder, until I noticed it and shut the gas back off. I believe the float in the carburator got stuck. So I was thinking about getting rid of the mower, but when I thought about all the time I had spent on it, I decided to try to rebuild the carb. But when I looked online, a replacement carb. was only $21 + $6 shipping, so I got it, installed, and the mower started right up - quicker than ever before. When I removed the old carb., it was evident by the tarnish and dirt built up that it had leaked at 2 or 3 spots, so it was the best $27 I ever spent on the mower. When reconnecting the deck, I greased the attachment points, and it now works better than ever. I did make one mistake - I failed to put a threadlocker on the steering shaft bolt, and 2 minutes into the first mow, my steering came up - when my steering bolt and washer came out. I looked, and couldn't find it. So, I was happy when I realized I still had the old steering shaft, which took the same bolt, so finding the right size was much easier w/ it in my hand. You better believe, I used a threadlocker the 2nd time, and waited 24 hours for it to set up.
