- Blades
It's always a good idea to keep a second blade on hand for each of your hand planes. This way, if you happen to get a nick in the blade, or you just find that the plane iron is not sharp enough for a patch of difficult grain, you can simply swap it out for the replacement blade and keep on working. If you wish, you can grind the second blade in a different way—with a radius for a rustic effect, or with a small back bevel to help tame tear-out. Either way, you'll have the freedom to keep your workflow moving so you can come back for sharpening at a more convenient time.
