PREAMBLEI play mandolin, but as it goes with mandolins, they are expensive to replace. So I was shopping around for ukuleles to hold me over, and plus I want to learn some cremonese mandolin repertoir which was string in courses of 1 with gut. I had tried this on my concert I already owned but good luck keeping a high E alive on that scale length.12 E strings later, I'm looking around for sopranos and eventually stumbled upon this one and noted two things. The top is SOLID SPRUCE, and the back is SOLID... POLYMER, polycarbonate if I had to guess. From my perspective this means that this ukulele is an all solid instrument for 40 dollars which is unheard of. Of course, the caveat being polymer back and sides, not as resonant as wood right? half right, half wrong. It's actually almost there! For those curious mandolin tuning is GDAE and I get a beautiful low G that vibrates right in my chest when playing this thing. If you like Low G on a soprano this could be your hidden gem.SOUND:The trained ear MIGHT be able to pick up that the instrument isn't entirely wood but as it goes with acoustic instruments, the TOP provides around 70% of the sound, the back provides 20% of the sound and the sides provide 10% of the sound. The back and sides being a single piece of some sort of high quality resonant polymer, it adds a very clear presence over the sound that the spruce top produces, and while I couldn't tell you it sounds just as good as a 200 dollar and up all solid wood soprano, I can tell you it sounds wonderful to my ear, and I am very impressed with the sonic performance of this instrument, particularly when you swap over to fluorocarbon strings.BUILD: This thing is built very solid. Maple just like an electric guitar would have, but since the body is polymer, it has no neck dive. In fact I'd say it's rather body heavy and frankly feels a lot like a mandolin in the hands. I feel like for the low g uke tuning, if you want to sound more guitaristic you're gonna appreciate the guitar like design. For me it works out perfectly in GDAE. One huge advantage of a maple neck, and polymer back and sides is that it does not budge with humidity or reasonable temperatures. I finally have the strings stretched and it is holding tune solidly. The electric guitar style tuners aren't top of the line, but for nylon strings they're overkill and frankly do a great job. Plus, I find the imitation bone buttons cute.SETUP OUT OF THE BOXThe frets were level enough for nylon, no buzzing even on the low G. Nut action was a little bit high. I have not done my own setup to this but I suspect I will update my review once I do.PS: To the people who designed this, or acquired this design, If you were to make a version of this instrument with a truss rod and braced for steel strings, I would pay double. If you were also to make an 8 string nylon version of it I'd also pay double.

Love the uke ... can't wait for my granddaughter to see it ( and play it) she has been asking for one and I thought this one looked fun . I took it out of the box tuned it and played it and was so surprised at the wonderful tone ! I may need one for myself 😊

I originally thought this might be fun for my wife, who has her own Ukulele, as maybe a backup, or one for home/one for school/etc. But when it arrived, I thought that maybe I might like to mess around with it too. To really set the scene, I've got big hands, and have never been able to play ANYTHING with strings in my life. Unless you count piano I guess, but never anything where you pluck/strum the strings directly. I'm not sure what I expected since my hands have never really liked to move that way in the past, but I was determined. I'd pull this guy out for a few minutes every few days, occasionally fall off for awhile before coming back, and this old dog has at least slightly learned a new trick. I can remember how to play a couple of chords, which gets me most of the way through a whole lot of songs that use those same few chords, and a couple of the chords I can even go through pretty quickly from memory :DThat's really all because of this set. It comes with everything a beginner like me would need to get started. The Ukulele of course, a digital tuner (I'll get more into that in a bit), a strap, 3 picks, some extra strings, a beginner's guide, and a case to hold everything all together. The Ukulele looks great, it has a very distinctive style. The beginner's guide goes through everything you'd need to get started pretty much from scratch. It does warn that it WILL go out of tune frequently for awhile before the strings really figure themselves out, and oh boy does it. If you leave it in the case for even what seems like more than a couple of minutes, you'll need to retune it. That said, tuning is VERY easy, the included digital tuner does most of the heavy lifting, you just need to pluck until the tuner turns green. It can figure out which string you're tuning and make sure you're getting it to the right pitch.I used the beginner guide to learn the basics, and start to learn some chords. It has a whole section of how to play the various chords, my biggest problem is, well, my big hands that just plain don't want to move the way they need to for some of those chords, but it explains everything in a way that is easy to understand, so I'm sure that it would work great for other beginners. This is great set for beginners, or someone who really wants to get started with the Ukulele. It might be a gateway set, and one that you'll ultimately upgrade from if you decide you want to keep playing, but for the price, this is a wonderful point of entry if you're interested.

I ordered this for my music making son and he thought it is a great entry level object. This are his thoughts on it: The ukulele itself is somewhat basic but for the buy it’s a steal. The ukulele kit comes equipped with a beautiful strap and a fantastic tuner. There was a mention about being out of tune at first and have played for about a decade now and it still, after few weeks of use seems to be having a little trouble holding tune, but is getting better. The carrying case is nice and comes with new strings and a cleaning cloth. It's fairly sturdy build wise however one of the pegs that holds the e string came a little raised and somewhat not quite fitting. Still holds tune for most part but that's the one string that does go out. Overall not a bad buy and definitely a great bundle for beginners and anyone wanting to learn.

I got this for my son and oh my God, the quality is really good!!! I was expecting a novelty piece of junk. But when this showed up I picked it up and felt the weight and looked at the finish and was blown away. For what it is, and the price, this ukulele is amazing!
