This thing is amazing, I haven't checked the water extensively yet but with what I have done, I know I'm buying more of these. The filter is like a Katadyn. There is more technology in these then with the sawyer, I think. I prefer that type filter (Katatdyn) so with this filter being the same, its the only small filter, pen filter or what ever they call it. other filters in this category, sometimes only have charcoal. I just don't trust it as much, I will be stuck on this filter for a while I think I really like it

This is a real convenient and robust little filter. Probably one of the most complete ones on the market. I will say that it draws very hard but if you want safe water from an extremely light survival straw...this is it.

last july I went hiking with my 9 year old son in a bog which is a wild life preserved area, with a track of a few kilometers for hikers going around it.At one point we misinterpreted the direction sign and later found ourselves kind of lost with nobody around under heavy sun and no water. My son was getting nervous and complaining about thirst. As I am a prepper I now carry at the bottom of my EDC backpack at all times the sidekick filter that weighs next to nothing. I did not plan to use the sidekick in that situation as I wanted to keep it only for emergency situations that I hoped would never happen. As my son started asking me how it would be to die of dehydration I decided to take the sidekick out and try it.I used a ziplock plastic bag attached to his walking pole with duck tape to get water from a small canal underneath the track. It was easy to prime the filter. I spitted out the first 2 or 3 sips and both of us drank enough water to feel on the safe side again.Strangely enough we found out after that we were very near the departing spot only a few hundred meters !The bog is in the midlle of an agricultural area so I got concerned about possible pesticides and of course most worried about my son getting some kind of giardia or nasty bug.It was never on my plan from the beginning to try out a new filter on my 9 year old son.As a further precaution we both started taking grapefruit seed extract the same night for about 10 days. It was around mid July and neither of us has gotten sick so far so I give a 5 to the sidekick. This filter is so light and small you donโt even notice you have it in your backpack !!update augutst 23rd: I now give 4 out of 5 as I could not get a correct explanation from the company on how to backflush the sidekick. it states on hydroblu website that backflushing is possible with the sidekick it you take out the carbon filter part so I requested by mail further explanations on how to do that and did not get an explanation. they just gave me the link to the faq page that says it is possible to backflush !! so right now I know I can backflush it but I dont know how to do it.

Update Aug 2021- my Sawyer squeeze was a bust on its very first day of a four day portage trip through Algonquin park, the seal cracked so I couldn't use it with my smart bottle either. I had to use the HydraBlu for the entire trip; I didn't get sick, on or after the trip, and no parasites. The flow rate is slow, and it took a bit of effort to use, but it will forever be part of my emergency kit.

This is an amazing water filter. Not only is it a 3 stage water filter that comes in under an ounce including the 4 replacements i ordered separately. This puts its capacity over 200 gallons , but it also Is extremely cheap in comparison to the other filters on the market of similar quality. I use this in my hiking bag as a backup and leave it in my edc/get home kit. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FILTER.P.S. You should always wipe the filter off using some kind of alcohol wipe after drinking. Your mouth has germs which should not be left to sit on the device meant to give you clean water. ๐

I love the size of this filter, takes up no space in my pack. It would be awesome if they incorporated a way to attach the extra filter in the cap or something cuz I know the two are gonna get separated. Lol

This was my backup every day filter for the... I hope I don't need tap water... experience. I ended up taking this in my day bag on a trip to SE Asia (Philippines). It definitely came in handy. I wish the replaceable small bottom filter wasn't so flimsy (plastic hinge broke), but that's a minor complaint. This thing is absolutely the best! I'll buy another. And for those curious... no I didnโt get sick. I used this to drink tap & well water from all over the Philippines, from known areas with sketchy water.EDIT: After using this for a year (still less than 50 gallons), it is outstanding! Every time I leave the USA, this goes in my pocket. I have used this thing all over Asia and I've never been sick.
