While in California I noticed many water front homes and buildings had anti Seagull guards of protruding wires sticking up to prevent the birds from roosting.I hade the same problem with small birds building a nest on my bay window upper ledge. Then we had to stay away until the babies flew the nest 2 months.I bought the hat pins and using a strip of 3/4" foam board I stuck the pins up through the bottom enough that building a nest would be a pain in the but ( so to Say ) a little glue would hold the foam in position for strong winds.

They were long enough to dip sugar balls in hot chocolate. The pearl end helped to grip the pin with the ball.

These pins are really well made and sturdy. My disappointment is that they are shorter than I thought they would be. I use them to pin fabric onto my long arm sewing machine, but they just aren't long enough to be comfortable pinning. It's difficult to not give these pins a 5 star review, but the length was the only one- star-less factor.
