This is a fun set with all the dirt and seeds you need to watch how plants grow. The seeds are marked not edible. I don't know why these couldn't be eaten, but the plants are not getting big enough to worry about that. When you put the little rope thing through the pot, I'd use a safety pin on the end of it for ease and something to hold onto. There are great instructions for the kiddos to start their own window box. The mini tools are fun and the stickers included some are artsy and then the temperature (C & F) and root depth measure (cm only). The seeds sprout quickly so no one gets too bored waiting on something happen. Then it just stops when the plants are about 4 inches high. Still a fun project, but don't expect to skip a shopping trip for veggies.

I bought this root viewer kit for my son and we worked on it together. He was very excited and followed the instructions step by step. I am very glad that he could focus on playing something (besides video games). It is a great science experiment at home and we had fun!

This is a fun and easy way for kids to see how plants grow! The kit comes with everything needed to get started, and it's cool to watch the roots grow through the clear window. It's a great learning toy for kids .

I wanted to love this, but for $25, the quality is not what I expected. The base is a molded plastic that is rather thin. So when you get the dirt, water, and seeds all together it bends the plastic. This did not work for us! I ended up getting a plant tray to use instead. The soil is also a weird composite soil that smelled off. I used soil from our local garden center. With all of that in mind, I basically paid for an acrylic box.So yes, it's a cool science project for kids to be able to see a plant's life cycle...but it's a mess as well. For the price there are better ones out there.

I absolutely LOVE this set, and there's only one reason why I removed one star. The packs of seeds say "inedidle" (meaning inedible, I assume) on each one under the name of what type of seed it is. Later on the literature it seems to imply that this might be on there because kids need to ensure with their parents that they are edible prior to doing so, but I have to admit that's a HUGE turn-off to see on a potential food product. This was easy to use, easy to grow, and the growth in my picture is in only five days. It was so fast! They look really healthy and happy. My kids enjoy seeing it, and I really appreciated that the instructions reminded you rather forcefully to put the seeds up against the sides so that you can see the roots grow.I like the way you water the plants by putting water in the tray and the "wick" pulls it up into the soil. That's cool. The plastic is not super high quality (on the viewer), but it works and it's easy to see through. The tray is a really flimsy plastic tray, though. It's large enough to get a good view of what is happening with the plants.Overall this set is a good price, in my opinion, and my kids really have enjoyed it and are loving watching the roots and plants grow in this. I won't let them eat from these seeds though due to the 'inedidle' warning on the seed packets. The seeds did grow quickly, though! Recommend for root viewing.
