I'm an FCC licensed radio amateur and have moderately expensive ham radio "walkie-talkies" that are higher powered and can access repeaters for serious extended range, but for more casual reliable use, I have purchased these Motorola devices for years, replacing them only because they got lost or finally suffered damage. These are not to be confused with children's tool radios or squarky CB radios. They are reliable, short range, two-way radios using UHF [typically uncrowded, ultra high frequency bands around 465 MHz]', FM [static-free frequency modulation like your hi-fi rather than AM - amplitude modulation - like CB or your AM home radio which can have a lot of static from storms or near-by electrical equipment] and are part of the FRS [Family Radio Service] that does NOT require an FCC license to use [they can also transmit with higher power on the GMRS radio service channels that are shared with FRS, but technically that DOES require a "no-test" FCC license -- there are separate low power and high power "push-to-talk buttons, and I've heard some unlicensed users inadvertently press the high power button by mistake -- but one should ALWAYS use the lowest power needed to establish communications and keep conversations SHORT so as not to unnecessary clutter the channel -- BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR]. They are primarily "line-of-sight" radios, meaning range is variable depending on obstructions between users, but is typically half a mile and up to 5 miles over open water under ideal conditions. Very usable for hiking for example. I use mine extensively for backing my RV into tight State/Federal campsites to make sure I avoid trees, rocks and get the unit level -- My wife is able to very comfortably guide me pass hidden obstructions and find level spots without yelling instructions or the furious arm waving I've seen others use. We've used them for mall shopping to co-ordinate when browsing separately and that sort of thing. They come with rechargeable batteries, but can also use AA alkalines for longer service time - can pick up all the NOAH weather channels and can be easily transmission tone coded so you don't have to listen to others on the same channel. These particular models are quite rugged, have a built-in flashlight, an an automatic flashing feature should they be dropped into water [they also float if you are using the provided rechargeable batteries. Other features are described in the product specs .Safe travels,

I got this for my boyfriend as a birthday gift - for our multi-pitch climbing adventures and for an upcoming ocean kayak trip. I love the neon color, that it is waterproof (when everything is closed) the weather channel, the emergency whistle, the light at the bottom, and the clip.We excitedly tested them out and learned that we had to find our own channel...I was hearing about someone else's lunch plans on the channel we were using. More importantly, I discovered that I need to add a tether to this device. I clipped it on the strap of my backpack on our multipitch climb and when I was descending and navigating some other climbers, I bumped it off of me and it fell 350 ft. Miraculously I found it and it works. Only the antenna cover popped off! Sadly, that means it is not waterproof for our trip next week! I am impressed with its durability to say the least. Now to find a replacement part!

These radios have a great sturdy build quality, and sound very nice. They lose a star because the supplied rechargeable battery life is abismal. When transmitting on high power you get a few hours battery life with light amounts of talking, and it only gets worse the more you use them. These GMRS/FRS radios also lack the ability to use repeaters which is a major drawback, however, they are marketed towards "normal people" and not "radio dorks" as a popular GMRS YouTuber would put it, so this is acceptable. If you're looking for radios to talk between friends and family that are less than a mile of separation these are a good buy.

I was worried that I wouldn't find a good walkie talkie as I've had some in the past that barely worked, even when spending the money. My experiences with them have been poor.I needed these where I could use for my son and I to communicate on our property. It's only about 1 acre of area where I want to reach (at most) but we tested them in our neighborhood to see our far they would go without breaking up. Given the reviews about the static in between houses being poor I thought there was no way it would work in our neighborhood, outside of our yard. We went approximately 1 km and I could hear my son with some minor static, here and there. Im sure we could have went further. We took one to our neighbour's home and could hear eachother perfectly in all areas of their 2 story home and separate garage. These walkie talkies are exceptional in my opinion and for what we need them for which is basic. We don't hike or anything. Haven't taken them on the kayaks but I have no doubt they will work great there as well. Clear and super easy to use. My son is 8 years old and has fun with them too. Highly recommend if you need a good set that goes the distance. Very happy! I can't comment on the battery life because we don't use them for long periods but will watch out for that and come back to review later.*we haven't had any issues with water but we do take them on our boat and around our dock but we haven't dropped them. I have read that they can be submerged but I have yet to experience that. Will come back if and when I have a review to provide.

Overall, the T600's function incredibly well, are reliable and worth the price, (I bought the non-cased set). Ordered 2 sets of 2 for hurricane preparedness - gave them out to neighbors who stayed through the storm. Overall, very pleased. All four worked out of the box, no issues. See particular detail comments below...1. You have to take the belt clip off, unscrew two screws... to replace/install the batteries. That's a challenge, as the instructions are not clear on how to take off the belt clip and if you've never done it before... PRESS tab AWAY from the unit, AND push up on the clip at same time. 2. These things are only waterproof IF you've tightly reinstalled the battery cover door, and have securely pushed in the rubber charge and earbud covers. All must be secure, or water will get inside. You cannot be charging or be using earbuds/headphones and have the unit be waterproof. Read the instructions. Don't give this to your earbud-glued kid for a surf/boating toy and expect it to work for long. 3. The T600 will do a LOT of neat things, and might be a bit overwhelming for non-techie users. I don't use walkie talkies... but was able to set these up, program the correct NOAA channel, and both (dual channels) Hi and a Lo channel. Easy set up ... again READ the instructions. 4. The Screws on the battery cover are a wide/thick slot - try a coin if you don't happen to carry a big flat head screwdriver. 5. The LED flashlight is pretty useful, and like the red (for nighttime) toggle option. 6. Complaint: These are big, thick (not heavy) handheld devices - those of us with small hands/fingers... you cannot wrap your hand around them. In fact, these are so big in my hands, that I cannot hold them securely, without the danger of dropping them - had to take the belt clip off, and they are still too big. These are made for big hands (did a guy design these or what?) Surely with today's technologies... they don't have to be that big!Wish List: wish there was an outboard battery charger for the 3.6 volt, 800 mAH recharg. batteries. Having to charge them IN the unit is not convenient or easy if you're out on the boat, in the woods, etc. HAVE to use regular AA batteries (3) at that point. However, I found the AAs (using Duracell Procells) to last quite a bit longer than a fully charged 3.6 volt rechargeable. If battery life is a priority for you, ditch the rechargables and use regular (3) AAs - if ecology is a priority, use the rechargeables. I happen to like the rechargeables, and have read up on how best to charge them to maintain their life as long as possible. The slight bit of extra effort is worth it.Lastly, a couple of reviewers mentioned not being able to hear... sounding muffled. Well, if you've got water in the speaker area, that will muffle them until it dries out. OR if the pressure changes... say you change altitudes or are in a hurricane ... lol. Yes, it can and will happen because these are watertight. Sealed very well. Simply open the battery compartment door... that will equalize the pressure - likely fix your issue. As the hurricane approached, we made sure to do that. We had no problems. Again, overall these are super walkie talkies. They work like walkie talkies should (they are not cell phones... ) and the few inconveniences, as noted above, are mostly personal quirks of mine. Super product - 5 stars.

These Motorolas are amazing, truly worth investing in for so many customers. We've tested and returned several units from other brands. These T600s are built better using tougher materials, their design is simpler yet more effective. I've tested them to over 2 km in congested suburban areas. These radios are clear, transmit over two power levels if needed to save battery use. Zombie killer green is awesome also, easy to notice if misplaced outdoors. Micro USB charging is the way to go also, could solar charge in power outage. Waterproof, not splash resistant as most are. Highly recommend.
