Recently I upgraded to the Canon R6 Mark II mirrorless camera and investigated acquiring some RF mount lenses to use with it. I shoot mainly outdoor stuff, like wildlife, birds and landscapes. Now if you’re like me, you desire to have a super long f/4 600mm to 800mm telephoto for capturing wildlife but just can’t justify several thousands of dollars to purchase one so I checked out the non-L RF 100-400 zoom and bought one. Having developed a slight tremor in my hands as I’ve aged (I’m 66), I sometimes need a bit of support to help to stabilize my camera and lens while shooting. I saw this lens collar but having just purchased the new lens, I was a bit hesitant to put this on it so I contacted Canon to check on the viability and impact to warranty coverage if I used this collar. They said no problem since it did not modify the lens and was made specifically to fit it. So I got a monopod and the collar. It is tailored to fit the RF 100-400 perfectly and attaches very easily by simply sliding on the mount end, aligning the index marks and tightening a single screw knob firmly. The interior contacting surface is lined with a film to prevent marring or scratching the lens’s surface. The collar is very well machined out of aluminum and anodized in a semi-gloss black finish. It provides a solid mount once tightened down and the design of the mounting foot allows the use of the R6m2’s vertical grip without any interference. The foot also has an integrated ARCA-Swiss plate so no additional mounting hardware is required, simple just place the foot on any ARCA-Swiss compatible tripod/monopod head and tighten. The collar has cutouts to provide access to the 3 switches on the lens body that control IS, AF/MF selection and Lens Lock. Off the tripod, the foot isn’t very obtrusive if shooting hand held so the collar can be left on the lens for different shooting styles. The only limitation I found lacking was the inability to rotate the lens to the vertical to shoot portrait orientation. The design of the collar and its location around the backend of the lens over the switches prevents rotating. I know there will be those that say if you can’t hand hold and shoot a small telephoto lens might as well give up photography. Well to quote Clint Eastwood from the film ‘Heartbreak Ridge’, I adapted and overcome!!

When mounting your camera with a large or heavy zoom lens on a tripod, this is a better way- takes the weight off the camera. This is generally recommended for a large lens by the manufacturers.

Fits the lens perfectly and works as advertised. Great price. What more can I say?

Been using it on my Canon EOS RP with the 100mm-400mm lens for a few months. It works great with my tripod to balance it so it isn't so heavy on the front. Without it, I tighten the tripod all the way, but the camera still sinks forward unpredictably. WITH IT, it stays nicely in place.
