Product Description

2-1/8" (Dia.) Forstner Bit

From the Manufacturer

Precision Shear Forstner Bits feature a double-ground, razor-sharp serrated edge that slices throughout the rotation of the bit for less splintering and chipping, producingflawless flat-bottom holes. This unique geomtric design has multiple cutting edges that produce greater shearing action, allowing for faster rotational speeds and more efficient cutting. Competitive forstner bit designs produce small chips and dust that collect in the cutting area, increasing friction and heat, thus causing the bit to dull quickly. Those designs also create holes with rough edges that require sanding. In addition to serrated edges, Precision Shear Forstner Bits include a hardened steel body for longer life and sharper edge, an ultra sharp spur to ensure accurate holes and less "walking", and steep angled cutting edges to produce holes that are smooth and flat.

I was wondering why my forstner bits wouldn’t cut through the wood I was using.. I would go through so many bits, and it was such a waste. I finally broke down and got the more expensive FREUD forstner bit and I am kicking myself for not doing it sooner. This bit is so sharp, it glides through the wood, making my job 100x easier. And it's lasted 10x longer than any other bit I've tried. I would 100% recommend. Thank you!

I have really only used a Forstner bit once before, but love ved what it could do. So I bought this larger size to make a small wood plaque with a Military Medal recessed in the wood. It turned out beautifully! The project looked so professional I was proud to present the gift to a family member.

They're more expensive than those coming out of China, but it is worth every penny. Well made, sharp and drills perfectly.

I actually had to put holes in 6” posts all the way through. This tool was sharp and sturdy. I used it on my drill press and it cut through the hard wood post like butter. I was skeptical that a tool this inexpensive would do the job, it I was very pleasantly surprised. I had to cut a LOT holes. The last one….cut through just as well as the first!!! A nice surprise…it came in a real nice wooden box to store it in!

In order to speed up my bowl blank production, I started putting mortise in using a Forstner bit. I have been using the Irwin Marples brand, however they don't leave a clean edge and would dull quickly in the hardwood I use. Based off the Amazon ratings of the Freud Precision Shear Serrated Edge Forstner Drill Bits I decided to try them out. I bought both the 2-1/8-inch and a 1-inch. This is definitely much more designed with the woodworker in mind. Very clean edges and smooth bottom cut. Makes nice curly shaveings and has not shown any signs of dulling. I highly recommend these bits to any woodworking artist.

I have several Freud serrated edge Forstner bits (and some non-serrated ones as well) and have used them for years. They're good bits (sharp out of the box, make clean holes, decent cutting speed, and hold their edge for a while), and are not overpriced. The serrated edge (like this one) cuts faster and runs cooler than the straight edge, but is slightly more difficult to sharpen by hand. I would recommend the serrated one over the traditional straight. That being said, these are not as good as Fisch bits (which are substantially more expensive). The Fisch bits make cleaner holes faster and last longer. So generally I get Fisch if I think that I'll use a bit often, and Freud if it's an odd size.

There are lots of forstner bits out there with prices all over the map. I can imagine that for many purposes, a more inexpensive set will do the trick, particularly when narrower holes are needed. But my project in this case was to make a crayon/pencil caddy for my daughter. I needed to drill smooth and wide holes into a block of wood that I would ultimately be painting and clear-coating. Oh, and, I needed to drill them at a slight angle to the wood surface. The wider the bit, the more challenging the drilling is, so I did some research to find the ideal tool for the job.The wavy serrated outer edge of this bit is an advantage that cannot be overstated. Most forstner bits have teeth around their outer edge, much like a hole saw. While the inner cutter action is the same, the razor sharp serrated outer edge is a huge advantage when it comes to creating a smooth hole, and also when aligning and starting the hole since the outer perimeter of the hole can be projected better than with jagged teeth. On top of all that, the quality materials and build process from Freud make this a top notch bit that I'll be excited to use again. For a single bit it may be a bit pricey, but it was well worth it based on the results.
