This is no Vertias or Lie Nielsen block plane, but that should be obvious. The thing about block planes though, is they don't need to be perfect to work adequately for the kinds of things you'd use a block plane for. I got this plane a year and a half ago when I just wanted a block plane but hadn't begun upgrading gear yet. Now I have a nice collection of higher end tools but I still have a use for this plane, and that's the best minimum endorsement I can offer most products. The Good: It has a nice weight to it. I have a veritas block plane, but it's bulky enough that I don't tend to reach for it for the same things I use this one for. The adjustments are simple, and unlike a lot of the cheaper planes the adjustments are smooth, even under tension. The thumb rests are a nice feature and it conforms very well to the shape of my hand. Often on old or budget planes you have to refile the mouth, but mine was correct out of the box.The Bad: The sole was not even close to flat. That's sort of expected, but it did take a lot of elbow grease to get it *close* to flat. After many hours, there's still a low spot toward the center that I'm never going to get out. But for a block plane, you do not need a flat sole along the entire tool. As long as the outer perimeter and the mouth are flat, you're going to be fine. Your work will reference off those points, so a low spot in the middle doesn't worry me.The meh: The blade. I haven't tested it to see what kind of metal it is, but it's on the thin side. It takes an edge very quickly but it's no A2/O1/PMV11. If I didn't have other options, I might see about retrofitting it with another blade. I'm not sure if any would fit, however. Also, I see people complaining about the sharpness of the blade out of the box (not just for this item, but generally any woodworking tool with a blade, eg planes and chisels) and I just don't get it. I don't expect companies to put a secondary bevel on their blades before they send them. If you're using a plane, there's a reasonable expectation you have stones and a strop or some other kind of sharpening system, since you'll be sharpening and honing *a lot* no matter how high-end your plane is. So that's a criticism I don't think is valid. If you need a block plane, or if you're just getting started and don't know if you need one or if you will actually find yourself using one, this is a decent choice. You're going to have to take a morning and afternoon to flatten the sole, but you only need to do that once and then you have a decently useable block plane.

I would like clear instructions for regulating the depth of the blade

Nothing not to like. This little plane works as well and some times better than my other planes. The wooden box is nice addition. I don't like tool snobs. I read a couple of negative reviews of this model but mine worked fine after a quick hone. No sole levelling or setting up required. Maybe they improved the manufacturing process. Adjustable throat makes clearing pesky jammed shaving easy. Back to the snobs. If we all bought high end tools we could do nice work ,and enjoy showing off to our toffy mates. Most of us don't drive expensive cars and don't buy expensive tools, but we do produce great furniture and enjoy the satisfaction of doing so without every great tool money can buy.

This is garbage. When it arrived the blade was so chipped that it took hours to get squared and sharp. Then when I put it back together I found that the plane body was poorly built. The ramp that the plane sits on was not square or even from side to side. This makes the blade stick through the mouth at an angle putting one point lower than the other. I had to work on it with a file to get it even close to working. The opening of the mouth was even cut out of square. Save your money and buy name brand. This cost me more in lost time than a good quality plane would have cost me.

It requires a bit of touch-up before being ready to use. Faithfull probably kept the price low by cutting a few corners (e.g. the finish) but the building quality is very good, i.e. it's hefty & reassuringly solid piece of metal. Can't see it break unless you are the kind of guy who is sensitive to kryptonite. When it arrived, the mouth was definitely not straight (off by ~1mm on the left side) but that was quickly rectified with a nail file and a straight edge. The blade sharpness was ok-ish, but any sane person who is planning to use sharp tools knows that sharp edges don't last forever anyway, i.e. that is not a fair point for quality assessment and you should get a whetstone anyway. The sole was flat without the blade and slightly concave with the blade on, but this is a general problem of metal planes and not a build-related issue. Simply put, metal has a finite rigidity, therefore tightening the two screws that hold the blade and the mouth adjustment piece produces two small concavities right under the portion of the body where the threads are located. It's not visible to the naked eye but it shows very clearly when flattening the sole on a flat surface. Simple solution: flatten it with the blade on. And I am not even sure the deformation would be big enough to impact performance.Bottom line: this tool _does_ need tuning, but once you get over that, it worksvery well. At this price point it would be truly unfair to expect perfect functionality out-of-the-box. In the end I cut take paper-thin and consistent shavings, and that is all that truly matters.
