The wood is smooth, and has a nice grain of you're thinking of staining or poly. I think just a light sanding will make them feel even smoother. I painted mine, and lightly sanded after painting. I really didn't have to, it came out just fine. The price is great for this bracket. They nice and thick., and the length and depth is accurate. I ordered 2, and they're the same size. The were delivered the next day, and came packaged very well. Nothing broken, chipped or dented. I'll use this product again.

Made the little misses an oak shelf using these corbals. They are nice and thick. Very good finish, ready for stain. Very pleased. I would definately buy again.

They said "ready for finish". Not really. Needed more sanding. And the keyhole hangers needed adjustment and they used the wrong screws. I needed the 150# rating. After proper sanding, they finished beautifully.
