OK class 2 meter. I spent a long time looking for a meter with user-accessible calibration. The trimpot on this unit is stuck in place. Hopefully it doesn't fall out of calibration...

Works really well. Very sensitive and perfect for letting me know how loud something going on is. Also you can use it to know if a party you're hosting is being too loud or not lol

I was sitting in my apartment working at my computer and at one point I noticed that a feeling of pressure around me all of sudden went away. It was noticeable, but I wasnt sure from what. Then I realized, at that point in time, it just so happened that my refrigerator wasnt running, the air conditioner wasnt running, I didnt have music on, everything was very very quiet. It got me wondering just what the usual ambient noise was around me and how much was that causing tension that would lead to fatigue? So I found this meter and I ordered it up and it works very well. It has a fast read option so it samples the sound at a quick pace so you can see quick changes in the noise around you. What I really like though is the max/min option it has. I can leave it sitting on the table and it will record what the max level of noise it recorded over a period of time. I like that because I was able to gauge just how much noise all my appliances and devices were putting out. I found out that it was time to purchase a more modern and quieter fridge! :)I also took this over to my sister's place and used it to measure the level of noise when she is playing the drums. We got some ear plugs for her dogs. LOLI definitely recommend this product.

This is a very inexpensive SPL meter with a current price of less than $15 with a discount coupon. The images in the Amazon listing look as if the product is made from cheap red plastic. However, the feature set looked to be better than some costing several times this price, so I thought I would try it out.I was quite pleasantly surprised. Yes, the product was made from red plastic and while it’s not the ultimate in quality and design, it’s much better than I expected and looked robust enough for medium-light use. The product was packed in a cardboard box. Also included was a storage pouch with a belt loop, a 9V battery, and an instruction leaflet. The instruction leaflet also listed that a “regulatorrod” should be included. I don’t know what that is, there’s no description of it in the instructions and I couldn’t find it anyway. Installing the battery was a bit challenging as the connecting wire had to be carefully positioned to the side of the battery before the cover could be refitted. This meter was easy to use but note that it lacks the ability to scan or store data and so can only be used to take instantaneous measurements. There’s both a max and min display which is useful. Also, there’s the ability to recalibrate the meter but the instructions are a bit vague on this. Apparently, something called a “calibrator” is needed but no other details are given. A quick online search indicated that such devices are available but will cost about $100 – a lot of money to calibrate a $15 device. When taking measurements, the position and direction of the meter are very important. The instructions suggest that the tripod is used to mount the meter in the desired position. No tripod is supplied nor is there a tripod mounting nut on the meter. I tried placing the meter 1 meter in front of a HiFi speaker (using a small stand and duct tape) and fed a series of tones at different frequencies through the speaker and the meter responded fairly evenly (~70dB) between 40 Hz and 15,000Hz with the dBA weighting. I like that there is both a numerical and a pseudo-analog display. One aspect that confused me is that three ranges are used to take the measurements – presumably to extend the dynamic range. The user can select one of these ranges to suit the measurements being taken or can select Auto to let the meter automatically select and change the range according to the sound level. This all seems to work well but, if a manual range is selected and the sound level goes above or below the limits of that range, the display continues to display a misleading limit value – it would be better if it flagged over-range or under-range, somehow. This was really my only issue with this device and it was fairly minor. Otherwise, the product seemed to work really well and it would be great for checking up on noisy neighbors etc.At the current price, it’s a real bargain.

I ordered this to see what sound levels I was dealing with around my house - traffic, airplanes, my air conditioner. I didn't really need this but it is a fun little tool to mess around with. It seems to work fine, although I have nothing like it to compare it to. The readings do seem to align with the typical numbers given in charts for certain activities (quiet room, soft speaking, conversational volume, etc.) It comes with a battery and the battery and wires DO fit just fine inside the compartment - just spin the battery around to "wind up" the wires before closing the compartment. All good so far!
