This makes the best coffee, better than a very expensive machine. The only potential drawback is that it doesn’t keep the coffee warm if you make more than 1 or 2 cups, but you can always pour into a thermo carafe.

I bought this to replace my normal glass Chemex, which I accidentally broke. I guess the dimples are a neat feature if it's something you want to experiment with, but in my opinion it seems gimmicky and just makes the Chemex even harder to clean. I'm going to stick with my V60 for now.

There are a few differences between the standard handle 8-cup Chemex and this one. An old one weighs about 100g less, but the walls feel just about the same. The ChemAer version does not have any seams but Chemex does not say specifically that it is hand-blown so that is unclear. The third, is the paddles. They really do increase aeration and increase the swirling effect for coffee. I have not tried this with wine, but it would seem to increase the aeration of any liquid.Everything else of them is the same, including the belly button. The new version is 5 dollars or so more than the paddles version, so if you are looking for a new Chemex, give this one a try. So far the paddles make swirling easier and make the coffee easier to measure evenly with a TDS and for having a similar profile all the way through. It seems like a small upgrade but with a nominal price and functionality it seems worth it. I am excited to try it out with wine as well. Recommended!

I have owned the originally design Chemex coffeemaker for over 30 years - after I saw it in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. In that time I've owned 3 pots. The first two broke due to user error and hard floors. The current one has been in use for well over 12 years. I started out with the 8-cup coffeemaker and eventually moved up to the 10-cup, shown on the left in the photo (sorry...it's needs cleaning with some Oxyclean). The new design that I am reviewing is beautiful and makes the same great cup of coffee (so long as you use Chemex filters and follow the basic directions of pour-over coffee making). The new design obviously has a handle instead of the wooden collar of the original. With over 30 years worth of use, we've gotten used to the collar so prefer it. But if you're new to Chemex you might prefer the handle. I can definitely see how it is easier to pick up a hot pot of coffee because the handle doesn't get as hot as the collar. In terms of the aeration, honestly I could sense the coffee was a wee bit smoother in taste. But we already make the perfect cup of coffee with the original and making certain the water is always at the highest temp possible before pouring over the coffee grounds. There is only one size Chemex coffee filter and the 8-cup coffeemaker takes these filters a little bit better than our 10-cup. But they both work fine. All in all, I could say if you're looking for a beautiful, classic pour over coffeemaker and prefer the handle, then by all means get this one. If you already own a Chemex you're probably fine sticking with what you have unless you just new, shiny, and beautifully designed things --- which I totally get. :)

Chemex makes great pour over coffee. This version of the classic carafe has bumps that help in aerating coffee/wine as you swirl. Yes, it does make a difference but of course you can also aerate in the plain carafe – this version makes it faster.I really like that this has a handle vs. the classic wood collar (I also own that version). This is made from borosilicate glass which is much better than regular soda lime glass. Borosilicate glass is more resistant to thermal shock (cold/heat) & tends to be more sturdy. This carafe is dishwasher safe.Chemex does NOT include any coffee filters with this carafe which is a mistake IMO. They should include at least 5 to get you started & try out the Chemex filters. Luckily, I had a couple in my cupboard but if you’ve never owned a Chemex, you will need to put some filters in your cart.
