Plastic and other wood-hard surface percussion instruments (i.e. rhythm sticks, resonator bells, woodblocks, etc.) may be cleaned with disinfecting wipes or sprays.
Building Your Classroom Curriculum
Your curriculum, along with your learning objectives and students’ abilities, will help you select the right balance of shakers, scrapers, metals, drums, and woods. Thirty cowbells playing the timeline for Ensemble I of the “World Music Drumming Curriculum” would be a bit much, but it would be perfect for a performance of “Click, Clack, Moo! Cows That Type!”
- Stretch your budget by choosing instruments known for durability, quality, and sound
- Do you need a tubano for every student? Maybe, but first make sure you have purchased a balanced variety of instruments and sounds.
Expert Perspective
In my early childhood classes, I love using the wood agogo to make sound effects. If you scrape it along the ridges, you can pretend that it is a frog. If you alternate tapping each side, it sounds like the clip-clop of a horse or the tick-tock of a clock. Of course it can be used for rhythmic activities too, but the sound effects are my favorite! -Jenny
